The Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University of Newfoundland held its annual Autumn Presentation of Scholarships and Awards on Wednesday, Nov. 18. Seventy-nine scholarships were presented during the ceremony, as well as two awards.

The Marine Institute has been named the winner of the Distinction in Innovation Award at the 2009 Export and Innovation Awards. The Marine Institute won for its work with SmartBay, an MI-led oceans observation project that plays a valuable role in support of marine operations in Placentia Bay.

April Arnott had only been an MI student for two months when she died at the age of 19, but there is little doubt she left a lasting legacy. The Marine Institute has honoured April's memory by introducing a new scholarship in her name.
