Become familiar with the methods and tools used in the management of coastal zone and ocean areas.

Three quarters of the world’s population live in coastal regions. This has created the need for an integrated management strategy. This program focuses on the bio-ecological, socio-economic, cultural and technological elements of coastal zone development and management. If you’re interested in a career related to planning, management of coastal and ocean activities or coastal zone development, this program is for you. You will gain an integrated view of the issues and alternative solutions to conflicts that may arise from multiple uses of coastal zones.

Program Structure

This program is comprised of two 13-week terms, one six-week technical session and a work term placement. You will explore ecological, human and socio-economic factors, strengthen your critical thinking and apply your knowledge in the field.

What You’ll Need

To enter this program you must be a university graduate, have graduated from a three-year diploma of technology program, or have sufficient relevant work experience in a discipline related to research, development and/or administration of the coastal zone, as determined by program faculty. You are expected to have a basic understanding of microcomputers and common WindowsTM based software applications.

Student Experience

In my experience, the ICOM program was a valuable stepping stone for pursuing an academic/research career route in the field of coastal and fisheries management. It introduced a broad spectrum of relevant topics to which students receive exposure and towards which they can continue to build aptitude. Also, networking with the instructors and staff at the Marine Institute presented a massive advantage in finding right opportunities upon completion of the program.
