Marine invertebrate culture systems (sea urchins, bivalves, crustaceans)
Bivalve aquaculture (seed supply, growout, production and health management)
Reproductive physiology of marine invertebrates
Current Research Projects
Scientific manager for a large multidisciplinary program to examine production capacity in bivalve culture systems in coastal subarctic areas. Principal investigator for several projects within the program and presently conducting research on:
- carrying capacity
- shellfish health management
- oyster culture
- sea urchin culture systems
- development of innovative culture technologies
- mussel species culture biology
- seed recruitment
- environmental monitoring
- stress indicators in cultured shellfish
In the past 5 years, have held research and development grants and contracts as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator valued in excess $2 million (CAN). A partial list of funding sources includes:

- Christophersen, Gyda. PhD candidate University of Bergen, Norway. Gyda was a recipient of a MUN/Bergen exchange scholarship (only 3 given in 1998). Under my supervision, she undertook part of her research at the scallop hatchery with Dr. Pat Dabinett and at a scallop farm in Notre Dame Bay. Topic: strategies for enhancing post-larval scallop growth and survival.
- McNeil, Gina. MSc in Aquaculture candidate. Gina is completing her thesis on the influence of food fluxes and mussel production at commercial aquaculture sites.
- Macneill, Sean. MSc in Aquaculture candidate. Sean is conducting experimental work on post-settlement behaviour of mussels in relation to food, space, and environmental conditions.
- Harding, Joanne. MSc in Aquaculture candidate. Joanne is conducting experimental work on alternate stress indicators in mussels with the hopes of improving farm operating practices.
