Note: To register for MSTM 4100/4200 go to: http://www.mun.ca/regoff/registration/ and select the appropriate term. Course OverviewUnder the guidance of the course facilitator and technical supervisor, MSTM 4100 will provide the opportunity for the student to identify a research topic in a specialty area, and develop a concept and proposal to be carried out in MSTM 4200. Both the students research topic and their technical supervisor must be approved by a committee. The qualifications of the project supervisor should reflect both an appropriate level of education - at least to the undergraduate degree level - and technical experience in the project topic area. MSTM 4100/4200 will enhance time management, critical thinking, project management, problem solving, and reading/writing skills as related to the research process. The course is designed to encourage independent study. It is a practical course in that it provides students with the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills from their technical specialty area, and from courses in the Bachelor of Technology & Bachelor of Maritime Studies Programs, to the identification and resolution of a problem. Students must assume responsibility for developing a project concept, managing the project, and fully documenting/reporting their findings. The project may involve: the creation of a design; the evaluation, selection, or development of a process; or the assessment of a technological advance. MSTM 4100 and 4200 are completed over TWO semesters. Students will normally register for MSTM 4100 the semester prior to the semester they expect to complete MSTM 4200. First Semester: MSTM 4100 During the first semester, students complete MSTM 4100 (1 credit hour). At the end of this course they will have completed and received approval for a project concept and project proposal. Second Semester: MSTM 4200 Students complete their approved project during their second semester, when registered for MSTM 4200 (2 credit hours). Students submit a project report at the end of MSTM 4200. Please note that MSTM 4100 is a pre-requisite of MSTM 4200.
