Marine Engineering

You supply the power, we supply the knowledge.

You will control ship 'systems and solve problems working with your mind and hands, both on land and at sea. We will equip you with the skills necessary to engineer a career you'll love. Responsibilities will include the mechanical operations of a vessel such as main propulsion and auxiliary systems. You will offer employers a strong technical background in marine engineering technology. With the real experience at sea in areas such as engineering knowledge, naval architecture, and machinery maintenance you will quickly distinguish yourself from the competition.

When you finish the program and have completed the required sea-time, you are eligible to write your fourth class marine engineering examinations with Transport Canada and have credits up to the second class level. This allows you to progress within the marine transportation industry to a senior position in a short amount of time.

Program Structure

This four-year program consists of seven academic terms, two technical sessions and three work terms.
First year: Two academic terms followed by a technical session.
Second year:  Two academic terms followed by a technical session and a work term.
Third year:  Two academic terms with a work term in between.
Fourth year:  A work term followed by a return to campus for a final academic term. The three work terms allow for 180 sea days required for Transport Canada certification. A land-based option is available for those interested.

What You'll Need

You must meet the Marine Institute's Application and Admission Regulations either immediately upon graduation from high school, following a period of employment subsequent to graduation, or by transfer from another post-secondary institution.

Transport Canada requires proof of satisfactory physical fitness, including visual acuity, colour vision and hearing among other physical requirements, prior to sitting for Transport Canada exams. Proof of physical fitness must be provided by way of signed Seafarer's and Marine Emergency Duties (MED) medicals from an approved physician for registration in this program. Contact the Registrar's Office for a list of physicians approved to conduct the Seafarer's or MED medicals.

Student Experience

The quality of education at MI was stellar, a perfect balance of textbook theory and hands-on experience.  It has given me the skills, contacts and confidence to go for the best jobs in the industry. After completing the program I had my first opportunity to work in my related field in less than a week.
