Post Conference Tours

Exciting tours are being planned for the Baie des Chaleurs, Northumberland Strait and Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick. Participants will have an opportunity to visit various finfish and shellfish grow-out and hatchery operations. Visits to key processing and research facilities will also be offered.

Please note that the cost for participation in the tours listed are preliminary figures only and may vary slightly in the final program. Tour itinerary may also have to be modified depending on weather or other uncontrollable circumstances. All tours are based on minimum numbers. If, minimum numbers are not reached the AC 2000 organising committee reserve the right to cancel any tour. Book early, maximum of 15 persons for each tour. Deadline for tour registration is April 21, 2000. 

AQUACULTURE IN THE BAIE DES CHALEURS (ACADIAN PENINSULA)
Two-day trip: Thursday, June 1st
 and Friday, June 2
TOUR I
Day 1 - Aquaculture Research at NBDFA Aquarium and Marine Centre, Shippagan, NB
Leave Moncton at 8:00 am for Shippagan. Have lunch in a local pub. In the afternoon, visit DFA Aquarium and Marine Centre laboratories and attend several interesting presentations on the research initiatives being conducted at the Centre on salmonids, haddock and in the shellfish hatchery. Travel from Shippagan to Caraquet for an exiting evening. Have supper at the Acadian Historical Village followed by a party animated by local artist. Accommodation in 3-4 star hotel/motel with private facilities.

Day 2 - Shellfish Culture
Travel from Shippagan to Miscou. Visit Chiasson Aquaculture's site including processing facilities. This company is a leader in mussel culture in New-Brunswick. Visit Pêcheries W. J. Fisheries. This company is involved in the culture of different species of shellfish such as bar clam and hard shell clam. Have lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon, visit Étang Ruisseau Bar Ltée. This is a strongly R & D oriented company involved in the development of new shellfish culture species. Return to Moncton. Supper is planned in Miramichi.

Two-day trip: Thursday, June 1st
and Friday, June 2
TOUR 2A - Shellfish Culture
Day 1
Leave Moncton at 8:00 am for Hardwick. Visit Sweet Eastern Blue Mussels culture operation. This company is using New Zealand continuous socking technology. Travel through the Acadian coastal communities of Baie-Ste-Anne, Escuminac,and Pointe-Sapin. Have a picnic in Kouchibouguac National Park . In the afternoon, visit one of the major oyster seed supplier in Atlantic Canada, Aquaculture Acadienne Ltée of Richibouctou. Visit By-Aqua oyster floating bag longline system. Have an Acadian supper at the Pays de la Sagouine and spend the night in a magnificent cottage on the Bouctouche River (Chalet Chebooktoosk).

Day 2
Visit a state-of-the-art shellfish purification facility of Mills Seafood Ltd in Bouctouche. This is the largest soft-shell clam processing plant in North America. Visit the Irving Eco-centre and the Bouctouche Dunes. Have lunch at the famous Bouctouche Bay Inn. In the afternoon visit Eastern Sea Products Ltd in Scoudouc. This company produces a fine selection of smoked salmon, salmon paté, shrimp, scallops, mussels and mackerel. Sample the fine selection of award winning products.

TOUR 2B - Finfish Culture
Day 1
Leave Moncton at 8:00 am for Port Elgin. Visit an eel culture farm, South Shore Trading Company Ltd, using recirculation technology. Travel from Port Elgin to Borden PEI over the magnificent Northumberland Strait using the Confederation Bridge. Have lunch in Shediac, a well-known tourist resort area and have a walk on famous Parlee Beach. In the afternoon, visit Eastern Sea Products Ltd in Scoudouc. The company produces a fine selection of smoked salmon, salmon paté, shrimp, scallops mussels and mackerel. Sample this fine selection of award winning products. In late afternoon, visit a trout hatchery and salmon culture operation, Greenacres Fish Hatchery, Grande-Digue, N.B. Have an Acadian supper at the Pays de la Sagouine. Spent the night in a magnificent cottage on the Bouctouche River (Chalet Chebooktook).

Day 2 
Travel to Hopewell, N.B. Visit the Hopewell Rocks and have lunch. This is one of New Brunswick major tourist attraction. Witness the power of the highest tides in the world. The Bay of Fundy coastline has been sculptured into a series of flower pots. In the afternoon, visit Crooked Creek salmon hatchery. This operation is using the flow-through system. Head on to Penobquis through Fundy National Park. Visit Aqua Fish Farm, a recirculation salmon hatchery. Arrive in Moncton at 6:00pm. 

Inclusive cost: Tour 2A or 2B, based on group of 15 = 2 days $ 195/person 
(Includes return transportation to Moncton; one night accommodation single occupancy, 
(1) Breakfast, (2) Lunch , (1) Supper).

AQUACULTURE IN THE BAY OF FUNDY
Two-day trip: Thursday, June 1st
and Friday, June 2
TOUR 3 - Salmon Culture and New Species Research
Day 1
Leave Delta Beauséjour Hotel at 7:30 am for
St. George. Visit Eldridge Fisheries Ltd salmon recirculation hatchery. Travel to Lime Kiln Bay for boat trip on DFA's Lady Jane to visit the Salmon Demonstration Farm. Packed lunch on boat. Head on to St. Andrews. Stay at Ross Mount Inn. 

Day 2
Leave hotel at 8:30 am. Tour Huntsman Marine Science Centre Atlantic salmon hatchery at Chamcook and Atlantic Salmon Federation Conservation Centre. Return to HMSC for tour of Alternate Species aquaculture (Sturgeon, Halibut, and various flounders). Have lunch in St. Andrews. Travel to St. George and visit Stolt Sea Farm Ltd salmon processing plant than return to Moncton.
