Comments : "I think my duties are relevant to my main internship goal-that being to help as much as possible at both schools, and in the end, increase the teachers' abilities to teach students, and run the Fisheries section efficiently. Everything I have done over the last month has either directly or indirectly helped the other teachers in increasing their capacity to teach. My assistance with the class outlines, finding reference materials, writing lesson plans, and even showing some teachers how to find information on the Internet, all increased the teachers' knowledge of the subjects and their ability to teach. Fortunately, during this internship I have been given a lot of freedom to do what work I see most important. Consequently, I believe that every duty to date has been extremely relevant to my goal of increasing capacity at these schools. Comments : "The conference that I attended was of considerable value as we were introduced to coastal issues affecting Palawan island province. Coming from and island province I found this extremely interesting, comparing similar situations and learning how issues are handled in another part of the world. I believe this will be one of the greatest things that I will take from my experience, the ability to compare my own experience with those of others and analyze successes and downfalls of how both are handled. Comments : "We arrived in Puerto on September 23rd, 2002, and being our first international experience, we were both a little nervous. But, that only lasted a short while. We were met at the airport by Mr. Oscar Nalzaro, Dean of SPCP-PPC. He made us feel very welcome and soon we felt at home here in the Philippines. Since then we have met many wonderful people and made, what we think will be, life long friendships. We are working on several projects and are under the direct supervision of Mr. Augustus Avillanosa, an instructor here at SPCP-PPC. Firstly, we are conducting a study on Grouper to determine the best stocking density to sustain maximum survival rate and maximum biomass. We regularly weigh and measure the growth of these fish and also monitor water quality at the fish cages. We are also researching the growth rate of Trochus niloticus (top shell). These shells are used to make mother-of-pearl buttons. Our project takes place at the Iris Trochus Hatchery in Langogan (Barangay Binduyan). The main focus of the Hatchery is to restock juveniles and to sustain Trochus populations in Binduyan shores! " [See pictures] |
