Marine
Pursuits
With
activity names like “Build o’boat” and “Fish eggs/fish guts” you know
this is not going to be your average summer camp.
This
past summer, MI successfully launched its new summer program for teens,
Marine Pursuits, with students from as far away as Change Islands, Davis
Inlet and New Brunswick making the trip to St. John’s.
The
camp is a unique opportunity for students from grades 9 -11, and from
all across Newfoundland and Labrador, to learn about career options available
to them in the marine industries. It’s also a great chance to explore
new opportunities, make new friends and have fun learning.
This
summer there were four weeklong camps, starting July 8 and ending August
16. MI instructors took time from their busy schedules to lead the groups,
which immersed themselves in such pursuits as mapping a navigation course,
dissecting fish and making their own caviar.
Marine
Pursuits is an initiative of the Marine Institute, Memorial University
and the Department of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education funded
through the Student Investment and Opportunity Corporation (SIOC). http://www.mi.mun.ca/marinepursuits/index.htm
