Offshore Safety & Survival Centre

General

The Offshore Safety and Survival Centre (OSSC) offers a comprehensive range of safety and emergency response training courses to the offshore petroleum, marine transportation, fishing and land based industries. The OSSC is part of the fisheries and Marine Institute (Marine Institute) of Memorial University, located in St. John's, NL. Through its satellite Safety and Emergency Response Training (SERT) Centre located in Stephenville, it also offers emergency response training to the aviation industry.

Quality Assurance

Training courses developed by the OSSC are subject to rigorous academic scrutiny. The majority of courses delivered at the centre are also accredited or approved by national and international regulatory or other external approving agencies. The quality of training delivery is assured by a staff of more than 40 highly qualified and experienced instructors. Additionally, the OSSC, as part of the Marine Institute, an ISO 9001 accredited training organization, is subject to regular audit.

Facilities and Equipment

The OSSC has an extensive array of facilities and equipment to support its training deliveries. Facilities and equipment include:

  • Large survival tank complete with helicopter underwater escape trainer (HUET) and various marine and offshore evacuation devices
  • Fire training ground outfitted with marine, offshore petroleum and helicopter fire simulators
  • Marine base outfitted with a variety of lifeboat and fast rescue craft launching devices
  • Variety of lifeboats and fast rescue craft
  • Fire pumper truck and emergency response vehicle
  • Seagoing marine training vessel
  • Large inventory of specialized training equipment

Applied Research

The OSSC capability includes an applied research unit.

  • Awarded the John N. Cardoullis award in 2003 for outstanding service to Newfoundland's fire fighting industry
