Training Facilities The Offshore Safety and Survival Centre (OSSC) has two campuses in the St. John’s Area and a satellite campus in Western Newfoundland. The main campus of the OSSC is located at Little Soldier’s Pond, approximately 30 kilometers from St. John’s and just off the Trans Canada highway and the Foxtrap Access Road. The second campus, the marine base is located on the Southside of St. John’s Harbour. The campus in Western Newfoundland is located in Stephenville. A large environmentally secured fire training ground OSSC consists of a main campus in Foxtrap, about 30 km from St. John's, the Southside Marine Base on the south side of St. John's harbour, as well as the main campus of the Marine Institute on Ridge Road in St. John’s. The Foxtrap facility at Little Soldier’s Pond has state-of-the-art fire fighting and survival training equipment. It contains a survival tank with an emergency procedures escape trainer to train you for emergency evacuation and rescue from ships, oilrigs, and helicopters. This facility also has a simulated ship structure to provide you with practical experience in controlling shipboard fires. Training is also available in non-marine firefighting and survival techniques. The Southside Marine Base is across the harbour from downtown St. John’s at Pier 25. It features lifeboat evacuation training systems and a 137-metre dock. Nautical science training and offshore safety and survival training (mandatory for people working in the offshore petroleum industry) is being delivered here and it is also the base for the university’s training and research vessels.
