AquacultureThrough the Marine Institute’s Advanced Diploma Program, you can be a part of the rapidly growing and challenging sustainable aquaculture industry. Aquaculture is the fastest growing food production sector globally. It contributes more than 20 per cent of all aquatic food products in Canada with more than $1 billion in farm and service sector annual sales. About 14,000 people are employed in long-term sustainable positions with the aquaculture industry and its allied sectors. Employment opportunities are projected to double in the next decade. Aquaculture is an important economic priority for the Canadian and provincial governments. Career Opportunities The advanced diploma in sustainable aquaculture will prepare graduates for numerous career options including: fish health technician, aquaculture environmental manager, aquaculture extension biology, feed production and management, fish and shellfish farm management, aquaculture technology, aquaculture research, aquaculture instruction, and work on aquaculture projects in the developing and developed world. There is a large demand for leaders and managers in the growing aquaculture industry across Canada and elsewhere. Our modern, training facilities include several fresh and salt water recirculating systems with filtration, temperature control units, containment and quarantine facilities, culture tanks, and several analytical laboratories. Students have access to other marine facilities at Memorial's Ocean Sciences Centre. Entrance Requirements Graduates should have an appropriate undergradute degree, a three-year diploma of technology, or a combination of work experience and formal education acceptable to the Admissions Committee. Program Description One-year program, combining classroom and practical experience, including a workterm placement in the last three months. Topics include business mangement and communications, marketing, aquaculture systems operations, fish health, aquaculture and the environment, fish nutrition, site selection, fish culture, shellfish culture, seafood handling and processing and practical aquaculture.
