Students who are covered under a similar plan held by a parent or spouse may opt out of the plan upon proof of coverage. Certain deadlines/restrictions do apply. Please contact the Marine Institute Student Union for further details.

What happens if I can't/don't pay my fees on time?
The fees payment deadline for students in diploma programmes is the first day of classes in the term. The fees payment deadline for students in certificate or industry-response programmes or courses is the date of registration.
All overdue accounts will be subject to a late payment penalty. The late payment penalty is $15 per course up to a maximum of $75 per term or session.
Students with outstanding accounts for any reason will be ineligible to register for a subsequent semester until the outstanding account has been paid in full by cash, debit, cheque, money order or credit card (Visa or Master Card).
Students with outstanding fees will not be awarded a diploma or certificate, and will not be issued an academic transcript of marks until the outstanding account has been paid in full.
All issues related to overdue fees are dealt with using the discretion of the Marine Institute Finance Office.
How do I get and access a general computer account (MI Computer Lab Account)?
General Computer Accounts are required to use network PC’s in all of the on campus computer labs. Your account is automatically generated upon your registration to the Marine Institute, you may pick up your account on or following the first day of classes at the Information Center.
How do I get and access a MUN Internet Account?
To obtain an Internet Account you need to fill out an Internet Account Form. Forms are available at W2150 (The Audio Visual Room). All students, faculty and staff can apply for an Internet Account for use on their home PC. Upon applying for your account it will take approximately 2 weeks for your application to be processed (it is processed on main MUN campus then returned to MI).
You can access your Internet Account by dialing the MUN Modem Pool and connecting from home.
Where can I get a parking permit?
Students who wish to park on campus must obtain a parking permit. Memorial University students who park without a permit will be issued a ticket for traffic and parking violation and must be paid at Traffic Court.
To obtain a permit you must complete an online application form, which is only accessible from within the MI Campus network. Computers in the Library are set up to allow students access to the parking system.
Lockers will be made available any time after the first day of classes from the bookstore. Lockers are available to students at a cost of $20.00 per year. At the end of the school year students are required to return their locks at which time they will receive a $10.00 refund. Failure to return locks will result in loss of the $10.00 refundable deposit.

For Canadian Students: April 15 for September; September 30 for January
For International Students: April 1 for September; August 1 for January
What is the cost to attend the Marine Institute?
Tuition for Technician Diploma and Diploma of Technology programmes for Canadian citizens is $173.00 per course to a maximum of $690.00 per term. International students are assessed a tuition fee of $865.00 per course to a maximum of $3450.00 per term.
Technical Session fees for Canadian students are $173.00 per course to a maximum of $345.00. For International students Technical Session fees are $865.00 to a maximum of $1730.00
Tuition for Advanced Diploma programmes for Canadian citizens is $345.00 per course to a maximum of $1380.00 per term. International students are assessed a tuition fee of $1730.00 per course to a maximum of $6900.00 per term.
Students entering work terms in Advanced Diplomas and Diplomas of Technology must pay a fee equivalent to the fee for one course upon registration for that work term.
Tuition fees for all other programmes can be obtained from the Office of the Registrar. Students sponsored by Human Resource Development Canada (HRDC) should also contact the Registrar.

Where can I live while studying at the Marine Institute?
Marine Institute students have several choices in accommodations. You can stay at Paton College, which is a residence type complex, which has double and single rooms and a dining hall. Burton's Pond maybe another option, this facility contains apartments, which are shared by four students. Both residences are located on Memorial University's campus, about 3 km from the institute, and are served by the city's transportation system. There is also the option of living off- campus, the Student Affairs Office (W3013) can provide help and guidance in finding appropriate off campus housing.

Does the Marine Institute have a Scholarship Program?
The Marine Institute Scholarship programme is made up of internally and externally administered scholarships, in the 2003-2004 school year; the Marine Institute awarded 65 of our students with scholarships.
There are normally two scholarship presentations in an academic year, one in November and the other in March. To be considered for a scholarship, students must apply for scholarships each term, application deadlines will be posted. One application form covers all scholarships and awards administered by the Marine Institute Committee on scholarships. Students may be required to submit additional application forms to be considered for externally administered scholarships, for more information please contact the Student Affairs Office W3013 or reference the Marine Institute Calendar.
What recreational facilities do the Marine Institute Offer?
While studying at the Marine Institute, be sure to take advantage of our large, well-equipped gymnasium, exercise rooms, weight room, with change and shower rooms. You may also want to take advantage of a variety of intramural and recreational programs in softball, floor hockey, basketball and volleyball. Individual and group bookings for recreational activities may be made through the Recreation Director's office, Room E2054.
MI students can also access The Works, Memorial University's on-campus fitness and recreation complex. Which you can visit on line at: www.theworksonline.ca.
