May. 15 - Rocking the Boat

Teams from the Eastern School District competed this weekend to design, build and race their own customized model boats tin the Marine Institute's first ever Model Boat Race.

May. 6 - Clarenville Repeats as Regional ROV Champions

For the second consecutive year, Clarenville High School won the Marine Advanced Technology Education Centre (MATE) Remotely Operated Vehicle NL regional competition. The event, held annually at the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University of Newfoundland's flume tank, attracted 20 high schools from across the province to MI on May 4-5.

May. 2 - Celtic Explorer Blog Details Latest CFER Survey

The Marine Institute is once again chartering the RV Celtic Explorer from the Irish Marine Institute in Galway, Ireland for research that will be conducted by MI's Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research. Followers of the research vessel the RV Celtic Explorer can track the ship's progress on its daily blog.

Apr. 13 - Watch MI Explore How Titanic Tragedy Changed Ocean Travel

The story of the Titanic is well known as one of the greatest marine tragedies in history, yet from the loss came significant advances in marine safety.

As the 100th anniversary approaches, The Discovery Channel and the CBC will feature the Institute as its explores what happened to the luxury liner and how its sinking contributed to modern ship design.

Apr. 4 - Student Achievement Celebrated at Spring Scholarships

At the annual spring scholarship ceremony last week, the Marine Institute handed out over $16,000 in scholarships to a group of 32 impressive students.

Feb. 29 - New Environmental Theatre and Helicopter Underwater Escape Training System Unveiled

Today the Marine institute's Offshore Safety and Survival Centre (OSSC) in Foxtrap introduced a new environmental theatre and helicopter underwater escape trainer aimed at enhancing safety and survival training for the province's fisheries, marine and offshore industries.

Feb. 28 - New Competition Tests Leadership, Skills of Nautical Science Students

The Fathoms, a six-member team of nautical science students from the Marine Institute, are the 2012 champions of the first annual Nautical Skills competition, hosted by the Company of Master Mariners of Canada (CMMC) (NL Division).

The competition is the first-ever event organized in North America to test the knowledge and ability of future deck officers and marine captains.

Feb. 23 - Fish Oil Biodiesel Research Supported by the Provincial Government

The Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development will establish a demonstration bio-refinery that will convert fish oils into biodiesel with support from the Provincial Government. The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, announced support of this initiative today with $89,100 in funding through the Fisheries Technology and New Opportunities Program.

Feb. 15 - Important Element of Ocean Technology Sector Expanding

The Holyrood Marine Base, with a $279,600 investment from the Provincial Government, is expanding its capacity for ocean-related research and training programs.

Feb. 13 - The Harper Government Supports Marine Advanced Technology Education in Newfoundland and Labrador

An investment by the Harper Government in the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland (MI) will help prepare students for careers in ocean technology and engineering. The investment will help offset the costs of the regional Marine Advanced Technology Education - Remotely Operated Vehicle (MATE - ROV) competition and help send three winning teams to an international competition. The Marine Institute will host the seventh annual Regional MATE – ROV competition May 4-5, 2012 in the lead up to the 2012 International MATE – ROV competition to be held in Florida in June 2012.
