Electron Shells

• Neils Bohr in 1913 proposed that electrons are found outside the nucleus in successive spherical layers called shells or energy levels.

• These electron shells correspond to a specific distance from the nucleus and are designated by n = 1 for the first shell, n = 2 for the second shell, and so on.

• n = 1 is the electron shell closest to the nucleus.
