The energy of the electrons in each electron shell increases the further away from the nucleus they are. I.e., electrons in n = 1 have less energy than those in n = 5.
Electrons always occupy the lowest available electron shell first.
There is a maximum number of electrons that can be held in each electron shell.
A very simple mathematical equation can be used to calculate the maximum number of electrons allowed in a given shell.
