3. Transfer Credits

Memorial University recognizes the Advanced Placement (AP) Program/International Baccalaureate (IB) Program for transfer credit. Should you have questions concerning a specific course from your AP or IB program, please contact our Admissions Office directly at 709-778-0380 or email eoc@mi.mun.ca.

If you have taken courses at other Post-Secondary Institutions, you may be eligible to transfer some of these credits towards our programs. Contact the Office of the Registrar (admissions@mi.mun.ca) to get the Application for transfer of credit emailed to you.

Fill out an application for transfer credits here.

4. Apply for a study permit (international students only)

If you are an international student intending to study in Canada for more than six months, you will need to apply for a study permit from the Government of Canada. Your study permit allows you to study at a designated learning institution, such as Marine Institute, Memorial University. You can start the study permit application process with either an early or verified acceptance from Marine Institute, Memorial University, which will be sent to the email listed on your application. Applying to study in Canada can take several months, so allow for sufficient time to process your study permit application.

In order to apply for a study permit or visa, you’ll need to be accepted to an institution that has a designated learning institution (DLI) number. Marine Institute, Memorial University’s DLI number is O19440995346 (beginning with the letter O, not a zero).

All new students travelling from outside of Canada to attend MI should also review the new international students website in order to be enrolled in support programs (such as the airport greeter program).

If you have immigration or arrival questions, contact the Internationalization Office.

Provincial Attestation Letter application process

As noted in recent announcements from the Government of Canada, as of January 22, 2024, most study permit applications will also require a provincial attestation letter.

Applicants who are concerned about the timeline for obtaining a study permit may wish to consider requesting an application deferral to the next intake.

5. Prepare for registration

Marine Institute students can register for courses through the Memorial Self-Service website.

To avoid delays during registration, students are encouraged to create an account in advance and familiarize themselves with the registration process.

7. Apply for Student Aid (if necessary)

Applications for Student Aid can be found at on the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador website. We would advise applying as soon as possible to ensure enough time to be rewarded with funding.

8. Accessibility Services

The Marine Institute offers testing and classroom accommodations to students with disabilities in accordance with Memorial University's Accessibility for Students with Disabilities policy. Students should discuss their needs with the Student Support Officer before the start of the term so accommodations can be put in place before classes begin. Appropriate documentation is required to be submitted by the student to Accessibility Services at MI.

If you are looking to speak to someone about accessibility services you can email Angela.Rickert@mi.mun.ca or call 709-757-0702.
