The Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) Alumni Award recognizes an alumnus annually for their exceptional accomplishments, an alumnus who has earned national or international prominence as a result of their outstanding professional achievements and/or service to society and is an inspiration to the MI community and beyond.
This alumnus’ accomplishments, reputation and character have by association enhanced the reputation of the Marine Institute.
The award is open to all alumni who have graduated from an Academic Council or Senate approved program at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland.
This year’s recipient of the MI Alumni Award is Jennifer Woodland, Managing Director of Grieg Seafood.
Ms. Woodland graduated from MI’s Advanced Diploma in Aquaculture program in 1998. Since then, she has worked from coast to coast across Canada in a variety of roles within the aquaculture industry.
Her colleagues describe her as “a champion for aquaculture,” praising her strategic thinking and dedication to the industry and communities she works in.
A trailblazer in the industry, she was the first female CEO of an indigenous seafood corporation and is now one of the few women in a leadership role in the seafood farming and harvest sector.
As an alumna, Ms. Woodland has remained an active member of the MI community.
She is regularly invited to speak to undergraduate and graduate students about career possibilities in the sustainable seafood economy.
