Introduction to Aquaculture 705898 (24 hours)

This course is designed to give workers/participants an understanding of basic aquaculture concepts.

It includes an introduction to the history of aquaculture; the production and market value of key species in Canadian aquaculture; job skills needed by the industry; a general introduction to the biology and farming methods used for key species in Canada, including basic concepts around land-based and open-ocean farming methods; examples of current ‘hot topics’ and public perception of the industry; and an introduction to new and upcoming innovations in the industry.

Introduction to Salmonid Aquaculture 705899 (24 hours)

This course is designed to give workers/participants an understanding of basic salmonid aquaculture concepts and methodologies.

Topics include: the production value of farmed salmonid species; biology and life cycle of salmonids; the farm life cycle of salmonids; the process of broodstock selection and early life stage culture methods; rearing fish in land-based systems, including the introduction of recirculating aquaculture systems design; rearing methods of finfish in open sea culture; and live transport, harvesting and quality control.

Introduction to Shellfish and Seaplant Aquaculture 705900 (24 hours)

This course is designed to give workers/participants an understanding of basic shellfish and seaweed aquaculture concepts and methodologies.

Topics include: the production value of farmed shellfish and seaweed species; early life stage culture methods; growout culture methods; and harvesting, processing and quality control.
