1. A Marine Institute Application for Admission is required for all Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland & Labrador non-degree programs. A non-refundable application fee of $60 for domestic applicants must accompany each application. The non-refundable fee is $120 for international applicants and applicants transferring from post-secondary institutions outside of Newfoundland and Labrador. The documents required for determination of eligibility for admission to each Marine Institute program are listed in the appropriate area of the Marine Institute Application for Admission, as well as in the Admission Requirements, Section 1.2, of this calendar.
2. An application is complete only upon receipt of all required documents and application fees. Applicants who have previously attended the Marine Institute and have not registered in courses for the past three consecutive semesters (Fall, Winter, Technical/Summer) are required to submit a new Application for Admission/Readmission together with the application processing fee.
3. The Marine Institute reserves the right to refuse admission to any applicant.

5. The application deadline for Fall term admission is April 15th for Canadian applicants and March 1st for International applicants. Applications received after stated deadlines will be processed as time and resources permit. Early application is recommended as limited resources and facilities may limit enrolment.
6. Applicants should note that all documents (including transcripts) used for admission purposes become the property of the Marine Institute and are not returned to the applicant. Documents submitted by applicants who are not accepted, or who do not attend, are retained for one year after which time they are destroyed.

The regulations governing admission to Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland programs are provided below. Applicants are advised to review the regulations for specific programs to ensure they are familiar with any additional requirements which may be required to determine eligibility for admission.
1. Applicants seeking entry to Marine Institute programs which lead to Transport Canada Certification for Seafarers should note that Transport Canada requires proof of satisfactory physical fitness prior to sitting for any Transport Canada exams. This includes satisfactory visual acuity, colour vision, and hearing along with other physical requirements.
2. Applicants to selected Marine Institute programs are required to provide proof of physical fitness prior to enrolment by way of a medical. This proof is required for participation in simulated emergency situations and in some cases is also required for Transport Canada certification. Medical certificates may include:

1. Applicants to the Marine Institute are advised that employers may require a criminal record check as part of the recruitment and selection process for work term placement and/or graduate employment.
2. A criminal record check reports on the history of criminal conviction(s) finding(s) of guilt for an individual based on a search of police files. The certificate issued upon completion of the criminal record check must be current at the date of registration in a Marine Institute program. Students may be required to undergo an additional criminal background check prior to the commencement of a work term.

It is important to note that if the check results in the identification of criminal conviction(s) or criminal finding(s), the student may not secure a work placement to meet the requirement for graduation.

Students admitted to the Technical Certificate in Fire Rescue program must possess a valid Driver’s License with an Air Brake Endorsement.
Applicants seeking re-admission to Marine Institute programs following a period of withdrawal should note that changes in regulations governing programs may have occurred during the period of withdrawal.
Applicants seeking admission/re-admission to the Bachelor of Maritime Studies, Bachelor of Technology, or Certificate in Leadership programs of the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland are required to apply for admission to Memorial University of Newfoundland. Applicants should consult the Memorial University Calendar and refer to Section 4 (Undergraduate Studies) for Regulations Governing Admission/Readmission to Memorial University.
Candidates seeking admission/re-admission to Graduate Diploma, Masters and PhD programs of the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland should consult Section 4 (School of Graduate Studies) of the Memorial University Calendar.
Candidates for admission to these programs are required to have official copies of all post-secondary education transcripts submitted to the Marine Institute Registrar’s Office by the issuing Institution (transcripts for applicants who have attended MUN will be obtained internally). Applicants from other countries should have these documents forwarded to the MI Registrar’s Office well in advance of the semester for which they are seeking admission, and should refer to the regulations governing English Proficiency Requirements as listed in Section 1.2.12 of this calendar for further information.
Applicants to the Advanced Diploma in Food Safety must hold an undergraduate science degree with a minimum second-class standing and have completed introductory courses in microbiology and chemistry, or similar courses deemed acceptable.
Applicants who hold an appropriate Canadian accredited diploma of Technology (three (3) years duration), or have a combination of work experience and formal education acceptable to the Admissions Committee will also be considered.
Applicants to the Advanced Diploma in Water Quality must hold an undergraduate science degree with a minimum second-class standing and have completed an introductory course in chemistry.
Applicants who hold an appropriate Canadian accredited diploma of technology (three (3) years duration), or have a combination of work experience and formal education acceptable to the Admission Committee will also be considered.
Applicants should possess an undergraduate degree, a three-year diploma of technology, or a combination of formal education and work experience which is acceptable to the Admissions Committee.
The admission regulations below apply to all Diploma of Technology programs and Technician Diploma programs. Applicants to these programs are required to have official copies of all high school and post-secondary education transcripts submitted to the Marine Institute Registrar’s Office at admissions@mi.mun.ca by the issuing institution.
Newfoundland applicants seeking admission to any Marine Institute Diploma of Technology or Technician Diploma programs are required to have either a senior high school Grade 12 Graduation Certificate; a Grade 11 Public Examination Matriculation Certificate; a Level III Adult Basic Education (ABE) Certificate; or other qualifications judged by the Marine Institute to be high school equivalent.
High School Grade 12, Grade 11, or ABE graduates require the following for admission to a Marine Institute diploma program:
a. High School Graduates – Grade 12
Applicants shall have completed graduation requirements for high school as set down by the Department of Education and obtained credits in each of the following, with a minimum combined average of 60% in the level three Mathematics, English and Science:
b. High School Graduates - Grade 11 Public Examination Matriculation Certificate
A Grade 11 Matriculation Certificate with a minimum average of 60% in the required courses.
c. Adult Basic Education
Completion of Level III Adult Basic Education (A.B.E.) in the following Department of Education approved courses with a minimum of a 60% average in each of the following three areas:
Applicants from other provinces and territories of Canada seeking admission to any Marine Institute Diploma of Technology or Technician Diploma program are required to have graduated from Grade XII in the University Preparatory Program (the Secondary V Certificate for Quebec applicants) with a passing mark in the required courses and an overall average of no less than 60% in these courses.
Students who do not meet the requirements for admission but who do hold a high school diploma may be eligible for admission under this category. Students applying under this category must successfully complete all qualification requirements for the award of the Comprehensive Arts and Science (CAS) Transition Year Certificate from the College of the North Atlantic. A full outline of this program is available in the College of the North Atlantic Calendar which is available online at www.cna.nl.ca.
Applicants who have completed a specific level of certification, or who have completed a specific post-secondary academic program, (to be determined by the program for which advanced standing is being sought) at another accredited post-secondary institution, or at Marine Institute, may be eligible for Advanced Standing (admission to a level higher than first year/semester) in programs listed below.
When advanced standing is granted, the following conditions apply:
a. Diploma of Technology in Underwater Vehicles
Applicants, who have successfully completed the two-year Technician Diploma in Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) at the Marine Institute are eligible to receive Advanced Standing in this program. Students approved for advanced standing commence their studies in Term 5 of the program. Additional courses may be required.
b. Technician Diploma in Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV)
Applicants, who have completed a three-year diploma of technology, or degree, in either Electrical Engineering; Electronics Engineering; Mechanical Engineering or Marine Engineering, at another accredited post-secondary institution, or at the Marine Institute, may be eligible to receive a advanced standing in this program. Students approved for advanced standing will commence their studies in Term 3. Additionally, in consultation with the program chair, students approved to enter the program under advanced standing may be required to complete a 2-week bridging program prior to the start of their program.
c. Diploma in Marine Environmental Technology
Applicants, who have completed a four-year Bachelor of Science degree at an accredited post-secondary institution may be eligible to receive Advanced Standing in this program. Course requirements for Terms 1 and 2 are waived for students approved for advanced standing in this program.
Please refer to Section 1.2.1 of this calendar for regulations governing non-academic requirements for the following programs.
Candidates for admission to the Technical Certificate - Bridge Watch Program must have successfully completed, at a minimum, a Grade 12 High School diploma; a Grade 11 Public Examination Matriculation Certificate; a Level III Adult Basic Education (ABE) Certificate; or other qualifications judged by the Marine Institute to be high school equivalent.
Candidates for admission to the Technical Certificate - Fire Rescue Program must have a Grade 12 High School diploma; a Grade 11 Public Examination Matriculation Certificate; a Level III Adult Basic Education (ABE) Certificate; or other qualifications judged by the Marine Institute to be high school equivalent.
Candidates for admission to the Technical Certificate in Marine Diesel Mechanics require a Grade 12 High School Diploma; a Grade 11 Public Examination Matriculation Certificate; a Level III Adult Basic Education (ABE) Certificate; or other qualifications judged by the Marine Institute to be high school equivalent.
1. Applications may be received from individuals who are 21 years of age or older within one month of the start of the program for which they are applying. The admission requirements outlined above describe what are viewed as the minimum qualifications individuals should have in order to succeed in each respective program area. However, the Marine Institute realizes that individuals may obtain the equivalent or other suitable qualifications from alternate sources to prepare them for technology programs.
2. Applicants in this category are required to demonstrate that they have gained educational, technical or practical expertise, in the intended field of study. Mature applicants must submit an Application for Admission to the Marine Institute and include the following documentation:
3. Since admission as a mature student is not on the grounds of age alone, the Marine Institute reserves the right to refuse admission to any applicant.
1. Students from other universities and colleges who apply to enter the Marine Institute will be considered for admission upon producing satisfactory documentation.
2. Students forced to withdraw from another university or college will not be eligible for admission to the Marine Institute until the associated withdrawal penalty has been served.
3. Candidates for admission are required to have official transcripts from all high schools and colleges or universities they have attended sent directly to the Marine Institute Registrar’s Office.

Students transferring from the College of the North Atlantic or from Memorial University’s degree programs should refer to the Newfoundland and Labrador Transfer Guide at https://www.gov.nl.ca/education/post-secondary-education/transfer-guide/ for details on established credit transfer availability.
1. Applicants from other countries must submit an Application for Admission to the Marine Institute and have official transcripts, and any other required documentation, forwarded to the Marine Institute by the application deadline for international students as stated in Section 1.1 - Application for Admission.
2. All official transcripts must be submitted by the issuing institution directly to the Marine Institute Registrar’s Office at admissions@mi.mun.ca.
3. Please refer to the regulations governing English Proficiency Requirements as listed in Section 1.2.12 - English Proficiency Requirements of this calendar for further information.
This regulation applies to international students registering in the Diploma of Technology in Nautical Science or Marine Engineering, or the Technical Certificate in Bridge Watch or Marine Diesel Mechanics.
1. Transport Canada examination and certification of seafarers is available only to Canadian Citizens and landed immigrants. International students completing these programs at the Marine Institute will receive a Diploma of Technology from the Marine Institute but they will have to write their certificate examinations in their own country.
2. Many programs at the Marine Institute include, in addition to classroom instruction, work terms which are compulsory components of the programs and are necessary in order to fulfill graduation requirements.
3. International students are responsible for finding their own work terms in their home country, and these work terms must be approved by the Marine Institute Office of Career Integrated Learning.
Applicants in or about to enter their final year of high school with a superior academic record (i.e. normally an overall average of 85% or above in completed English, Math and Science courses at the 2000 or 3000 level) may apply to enroll in Marine Institute courses. The applicant for concurrent studies must be enrolled in a high school and completing a slate of courses that meets the course requirements for admission as specified in Section 1.2.5.1 Applicants Who Have Followed the High School Curriculum of Newfoundland & Labrador.
2. Applicants will be required to submit a letter requesting enrolment in a specific course and provide a list of final year registrations; an official high school transcript; and a letter from the high school principal or guidance counsellor clearly supporting admission for concurrent studies.
3. Applicants must submit a completed application for admission/ readmission together with the appropriate fee.
4. Normally, enrolment for concurrent studies students will be limited to 1 course in a given semester. Fees and deadlines are the same as for regularly admitted students. Credit will be awarded after successful completion of the course(s) and successful completion of the requirements for admission to the Marine Institute.
5. Normally, eligibility to enroll is limited to the Fall and Winter semesters.
6. Concurrent studies students will be automatically considered for general admission to the Marine Institute for the Fall semester of the following academic year. The requirements for admission as specified in Section 1.2.5.1 High School Graduates – Grade 12 will apply.
Where circumstances warrant, applicants who do not meet the regulations for Admission/Readmission to the Marine Institute may be admitted to the Marine Institute with the approval of the Marine Institute’s Committee on Special Admissions.
a. Applicants must submit a completed application for admission/ readmission together with the appropriate fee and supporting documentation.
b. Applicants must submit a letter to the Committee on Special Admissions outlining the grounds for requesting special consideration to admissions@mi.mun.ca.
c. Applicants must also provide a letter from a school principal, guidance counsellor, employer or other responsible person substantiating these grounds.
d. Supporting documentation should be received at least one month prior to the beginning of the semester to which admission is being sought.
As English is the primary language of instruction at the Marine Institute, all applicants seeking admission to the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland must possess an adequate knowledge of written and spoken English as a prerequisite to admission. Regardless of country of origin or citizenship status, applicants will be required to provide proof of proficiency in the English language as described in 1.2.12.1 English Language Secondary Institution, Section 1.2.12.2 English Language Post-Secondary Institution, Section 1.2.12.3 Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Intensive English Program (IEP), Section 1.2.12.4 Standardized Tests, and Section 1.2.12.5 Other Forms of Proof of English Language Proficiency.
Applicants are required to have successfully completed the equivalent of three years of full-time instruction in an English language secondary institution as recognized by the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland. Applicants must successfully complete appropriate course(s) in English at the Grade 12 or equivalent level. English as a second or additional language (ESL/EAL) courses are not acceptable for meeting this requirement. The Marine Institute may require, as deemed appropriate by the Admissions Committee, further proof of English proficiency through an acceptable standardized test as outlined under Section 4.2.4 Standardized Tests in the Memorial University Calendar.
Applicants who have attended a recognized post-secondary institution where English is the language of instruction must have successfully completed one of the following:
Applicants who have attended post-secondary institutions other than those noted above, and who do not meet the English language proficiency requirements within this section, will normally be required to take an acceptable standardized test as outlined under Section 4.2.4 Standardized Tests in the Memorial University Calendar.
Applicants who have early acceptance to the Marine Institute, but have not obtained the English language proficiency requirements to be admitted, have the opportunity to take part in the Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Intensive English Program (IEP). Applicants in the IEP may provide evidence of reaching the required English language proficiency by way of their performance in their IEP coursework, or by achieving an acceptable score on an institutionally recognized test or a standardized test as outlined under Section 4.2.4 Standardized Tests in the Memorial University Calendar.
Applicants may demonstrate proof of English proficiency through a standardized test acceptable to the Marine Institute Registrar. Where necessary, the Registrar may consult with the Marine Institute Admissions Committee and the English as a Second Language Department with Memorial University. Acceptable tests, minimum scores requirements, and submission instructions are provided online.
Other forms of proof of English language proficiency, acceptable to the Marine Institute Registrar may be considered. Where necessary, the Registrar may consult with the Marine Institute Admissions Committee and the English as a Second Language office with Memorial University of Newfoundland.
The admission status of an application to the Marine Institute programs may fall in one of the following categories:
a. Incomplete: This classification refers to an application which has been received and acknowledge and the review of the applicant for admission is currently underway or about to begin. Following this review, additional information may be requested from an applicant or the applicant may be classified as Accepted, Conditionally Accepted, Not Accepted or Wait Listed.
b. Complete: This classification indicates that all information and documentation has been received and the application is ready for review.
c. Decision: This classification indicates that a decision has been made on an application. Decisions include:
d. Wait Listed for Non-Degree Program: A wait list is maintained up to the last date to add courses. After this date all applications are removed except for the first number of applicants equal to the cohort size of the program. Applicants removed from the wait list will need to reapply for a future intake and pay the corresponding application fee. An applicant will be wait listed if admission requirements have been met but the program has been filled.
e. Withdrawn: If at any time during the application review and admission process, the applicant notifies the Registrar’s Office that they are not interested in joining the program for which they applied, the application will be withdrawn and no further communication will be made with the applicant concerning admission or registration for the program offering in question.
f. Denied Acceptance, Incomplete: Any applications which are incomplete after the registration deadline in any given term will be assigned this decision. You must contact the registrar’s office to discuss your application eligibility for subsequent terms.
The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University is governed by policies, rules and regulations designed to ensure fair and equitable treatment for the entire Institute community. Some of the regulations deal with the normal workings of the Institute (registration deadlines, etc.) and pertain to all students. Other regulations, however, especially those concerned with readmission, supplementary examinations, deferred examinations and academic misconduct, apply to certain students in specific situations. Every student has the right to appeal decisions resulting from the application of Marine Institute regulations.
