3.0 Scholarships, Awards, Bursaries & Other Recognitions

The Marine Institute scholarship program is made up of internally and externally administered scholarships. There are normally two scholarship presentations in an academic year; one in fall and one in winter. The application deadline dates for the current academic year appear in the list of important dates printed at the front of the calendar.

Students must apply for scholarships each term. One application form covers all general scholarships that the Marine Institute Committee on Scholarships awards each fall and winter. Students may be required to submit additional application forms to be considered for special or externally administered scholarships.

These guidelines cover scholarships, bursaries, awards and other recognitions administered by the Scholarship Committee of the . They are applicable for the academic year under consideration.

3.1 General Eligibility

  • Applicants must be registered as full-time students at the Marine Institute (MI) for the academic semester in which the scholarships & awards are being awarded.
  • Students must apply for scholarships to be considered. Students who do not apply may not claim any right of consideration by the Institute. However, the Scholarship Committee reserves the right to award scholarships to students who have not applied.
  • Students must have achieved a minimum average of 70% in the courses used to assess their eligibility.
  • Students must have successfully passed all courses considered in the eligibility evaluation.
  • Students found in violation of the Academic Misconduct Code will not be considered for scholarships, bursaries, or other awards during the period in which a penalty appears on their academic record. Awards may also be rescinded in accordance with the policy outlined in Section 11.0 – Academic Misconduct.
  • For scholarships and awards administered by the Marine Institute Academic Council's Scholarship Committee, financial need is assumed for all applicants. As such, students may self-declare financial need on the application form.
  • Pass/fail courses required for external certification (e.g., MED, First Aid, Radio Operator) will not be included in course load calculations if they are completed as blocks and not concurrently with other courses.

3.2 Course Load Requirements

  • Students should normally be registered for a course load equal to or greater than that prescribed for their program.
  • Students taking more than the normal course load will have their average calculated based on all courses taken.
  • Students who take a reduced course load may still be eligible, provided the reduction is no more than one course per semester in both Fall and Winter.
  • Students in diploma programs who are provisionally admitted to undergraduate degrees may count undergraduate courses toward their required course load for scholarship eligibility.
  • Students receiving accommodations under the Accessibility Policy for Students with Disabilities may remain eligible with a reduced course load, if the reduction in courses is an approved as a formal academic accommodation.

3.3 Academic Level and Program-Specific Criteria

  • Entrance Scholarships are awarded based on the high school marks used for admission.
  • First-year students are considered for scholarships in the Fall semester based on the academic marks used for admission, and in the Winter semester based on their Fall semester performance.
  • Undergraduate transfer students are considered for scholarships in the Fall semester based on the previous year’s academic performance, as reflected on their official transcript, provided they were enrolled as full-time students according to the definition used by their previous institution. The Winter semester is assessed based on their first-term performance at the Marine Institute.
  • Second- and Final-Year Students are evaluated based on their cumulative academic performance in the preceding academic year.
  • Advanced Diploma students considered for scholarships in the Fall semester based on the academic marks used for admission, and in Winter semester are assessed based on their first-term performance at the Marine Institute.
  • Graduate students are considered for scholarships in the Fall semester based on the previous 20 courses indicated on their official academic transcript. The Winter semester is assessed based on their first-term performance at the Marine Institute.
  • Students entering the Bachelor of Maritime Studies or Bachelor of Technology programs are evaluated based on final-year marks from their diploma program.
  • Technical Certificate students are considered for scholarships in the Fall semester based on the academic marks used for admission, and in the Winter semester, they are assessed based on first-term performance and, where applicable, faculty recommendation.
  • Students enrolled in programs shorter than one academic year are not eligible unless a scholarship is specifically designated for their program.

3.4 Evaluation and Selection Criteria

  • Scholarships and awards are typically given to the eligible student with the highest marks unless an award has specific non-academic criteria.
  • In the event of a tie:
    • The student taking a greater number of courses will be awarded the scholarship.
    • If the course loads are equal, unrounded course marks will be used, and the higher average will be selected.
    • If unrounded averages are also equal, the Committee will make every effort to award equal-value scholarships to all tied students.
  • Where possible, scholarship value will be aligned with academic performance.
  • Awards recognizing performance in a specific area are based on faculty and academic school recommendations. These awards do not require the recipient to meet the general course load or minimum average requirements, though the student must have been registered full-time for the academic year.

3.5 Scholarship Limits and External Awards

  • Students are normally eligible to receive only one scholarship administered by the MI Scholarship Committee per academic year. This does not include awards that require additional documentation or have separate application processes.
  • There is no limit on the number of external scholarships a student may hold. An external scholarship is defined as one administered or approved by an external committee (e.g., Ocean Ranger, Atlantic Accord, Master Mariners of Canada, etc.).

3.6 Special Considerations

  • Students who successfully pass a supplementary examination will be considered for scholarships and awards, provided they meet all other eligibility criteria.
  • Some scholarships may have additional specific requirements beyond those listed here. These will be outlined in the individual scholarship descriptions.
