SSPR (also known as Self-Service Password Reset) is a feature within our environment that allows you to reset your password using Multifactor Authentication. This feature will help you to reset your password without administrative intervention.
In order to avail of the SSPR feature, you must have at least two or more authentication methods set up with your account. This can be the Microsoft Authenticator app, your phone number, a secondary email address, security key, or a combination of these methods and others. To add additional authentication methods and to see what methods are currently registered with your account, please visit: My Sign-Ins | Security Info | Microsoft.com to add another authentication method, please click on "Add sign-in method" and follow the prompts.
In an effort to prevent intrusion through the usage of a compromised authentication method, to reset your password you are required to authenticate two different ways. Should one method become compromised in a sophisticated attack, the second method is a fallback should the first be compromised or vice-versa.
SSPR can be used within any Microsoft 365 application or website that you are utilizing, provided that you are attempting to sign-in using your Marine Institute account. In addition to this, users also will have the option to reset their password when attempting to login to any Marine Institute managed computer.
Enrolling and Using SSPR Instructions
We are making efforts to help streamline the password reset process to make it easier for users to have their password reset in a secure manner. Manually resetting passwords take time and require that the user be verified prior to a password reset, creating administrative overhead which can be easily mitigated through SSPR. Like Multifactor Authentication, this is one of the many security features we have implemented at the Marine Institute as we continue to build and strengthen our security portfolio.
Should you need assistance with SSPR or a password reset, please contact the Service Desk and we will be happy to assist you.
