Marine Bioprocessing Facility

Marine Bioprocessing Facility

This facility was established in response to the significant quantities of processing discards generated from the fishing and aquaculture industries each year in Atlantic Canada.

The facility opened in December 2006 with assistance from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Government, Atlantic Canadian universities and industry partners.

This facility is available to clients for:

  • the isolation of potentially valuable by-products from seafood waste streams
  • the purification and concentration of valuable by-products
  • pilot scale, preliminary production of valuable by-products prior to commercialization
  • conducting industrial workshops for processing employees and other personnel

This 270 square metre facility is equipped with:

  • a variety of extraction, concentrating and drying equipment
  • extrusion processing equipment
  • a 208 litre batch biodiesel processor

Marine Bioprocessing Laboratory/Biotechnology Laboratory

This laboratory opened in 2014 and was established in response to a need for the development and adaptation of processes for the utilization of marine by-products. The research laboratory can develop and test potential solutions for the marine processing industry. It is also available for student research into the development and utilization of marine by products.

This research laboratory is available to clients for:

  • the lab scale isolation of potentially valuable by-products from seafood waste streams
  • lab scale production (up to 5 Kg) of valuable bioprocessing products
  • the testing and analysis of potentially valuable bioprocessing products from seafood streams
  • the purification and concentration of valuable marine by-products
  • proximate and food chemistry analysis

This 228 square metre facility is equipped with:

  • Gas Chromatograph
  • Food chemistry analytical equipment
  • Environmental analysis equipment
