Heather Burke (M.Sc. Food Science, MBA)

Heather joined the senior management team of the Marine Institute in 2005 as the Director of Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development. Heather is an internationally recognized leader with more than 20 years-experience in planning, developing and implementing applied research and training for the local, national and international seafood, aquaculture and marine bio-industries. She leads a diverse team of 15+ scientific and technical personnel (research scientists, engineers, technologists, post docs, grad students) and provides multi-disciplinary scientific and technical expertise to industry, academia and government in areas of seafood processing, aquaculture and marine bioprocessing.

She facilitates collaborations with provincial, national and international industry clients, academic institutions and government departments, and is an active member of several provincial, national and international seafood and aquaculture advisory committees. In her spare time, Heather is a PhD candidate (Environmental Science) specializing in value chain optimization of unutilized marine biomass materials generated by the Newfoundland and Labrador seafood industry.
