Community Based Training
CBED
Students entering Transport Canada Certification Training Programs are required to be familiar with Transport Canada regulations governing the examination and certification of seafarers.
Transport Canada requires that candidates attempting certification examinations have specific minimum periods of sea-service and/or prior certification qualifications.
Applicants should refer to Transport Canada's TP2293 for details on the periods of time required for each certificate. Candidates interested in pursuing Canadian Certification for Seafarers should note that they are subject to certain minimum physical requirements that are prescribed by Transport Canada.
Transport Canada examination and certification of seafarers is available only to Canadian Citizens and landed immigrants.

The holder of this certificate may act as a Master on board a fishing vessel of not more than 100 gross tonnage engaged on a near coastal or sheltered waters voyage and as Officer in charge of the watch of a fishing vessel of any tonnage engaged on near coastal and sheltered waters voyage.
Fishing Master IV is offered over the course of 14 weeks, and includes the following tutorials and courses:
Fisheries and Marine Institute offers a variety of short courses to assist individuals with the requirements to challenge a Transport Canada exam. Short courses for the Fishing Master IV are delivered at Marine Institute, online and in the community for individuals to complete over the course of 14 weeks.
Locations for community offerings of Fishing Master IV vary from year to year, if minimum number of registrants in a community are met and there is access to adequate resources in a geographic region. Individuals who are interested in completing a Fishing Master IV in a community site should contact fishingmasters@mi.mun.ca to indicate their interest or visit our Fishing Masters Registration Information to learn more.

Some courses to assist individuals with challenging a Transport Canada exam for a Fishing Master II are delivered online for individuals to complete over the course of 16 weeks.
