Celebrating a Lasting Contribution

Family members of the late Dr. Arthur W. May visited the Marine Institute to celebrate another lasting contribution of Dr. May to Memorial University with the unveiling of his portrait at the Dr. C. R. Barrett Library, Marine Institute.

Dr. May was president and vice-chancellor of Memorial University from 1990-1999. His professional career included work as a fisheries scientist, a fisheries manager and an international negotiator, and he was CEO of several public institutions.Dr. Arthur May Portrait

Dr. May was deputy minister of the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans from 1982-1985 and president of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada from 1986-1990. Dr. May was named Memorial's Alumnus of the Year in 1983, received an honorary degree from Memorial in 1989 and was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada in December 1995.

At Dr. May's request his thesis was given to the Marine Institute - Biology and Fishery of Atlantic Cod (Gadus Morhua Morhua L.) from Labrador, 1966. Marine Institute is very honoured to have his portrait and thesis on display together at the Dr. C. R. Barrett Library. The thesis is also available on Memorial University’s online collection at collections.mun.ca

The portrait is a work by Yousuf Karsh, a master photographer of the 20th century. Present for the portrait unveiling were family members Sonia May, wife to the late Dr. May, and son Stephen and daughters Heather and Maria.
