Lewisporte Regional Fisheries and Marine Centre

To further its efforts in regional and rural development the Marine Institute has established the Lewisporte Regional Fisheries and Marine Centre as a two year pilot project to service the Central Newfoundland region

The Centre will be responsible for:

  • identifying gaps in education, training, and research in the region
  • connecting opportunities for the enhancement of client industries through applied research and technology transfer
  • coordinating the response from the Institute, and its schools and applied research centres
  • promoting capacity development in education, training, and applied research throughout its primary and secondary catchment areas.

The Regional Fisheries and Marine Centre is located at the campus of Dietrac Technical Institute, a local not for profit industrial trades college.

Central Newfoundland has a strong dependence on fisheries and marine sectors with enterprises in the marine transportation sector, marine recreation, ferry services, boat building, as well as aquaculture and seafood harvesting. Lewisporte envisages the marine sector playing a significant role in the Town’s future and has shown a strong interest in working with the Institute to establish fisheries and marine training programs in the town to serve the central region.
