English Summer Institute

English Summer Institute 2017 (ESL and MI Ocean Summer Institute Program)

The English Summer Institute at Memorial University is a 5- week program created to meet the needs of English language learners who are interested in the marine environment and related industries. It consists of English language classes and workshops, hands-on classroom instruction and field trips in marine related fields, in addition to other fun filled activities. The goal of the program is to help students develop a better appreciation of the coastal, ocean and maritime sectors while enhancing their language skills and practical experience.

Program Dates/Fees

July 3 to August 4, 2017/ CAD 3,700
(Students should plan to arrive on campus by July 2 at the latest)

English as a Second Language (ESL)

The language portion of the program (15 hours per week) will be delivered at the St. John’s Campus of Memorial University. It focuses on strengthening students’ skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students will have access to a multimedia computer lab, the university libraries, and other university facilities during their studies.

MI Ocean Summer Institute

The Marine Institute portion of the program (9 hours per week) will be delivered at the Marine Institute Campus of Memorial University. Students will ‌explore ocean and marine related topics and practices, such as aquaculture, coastal resource development and management, voyage planning and execution, maritime communication, ROV pilotage, ocean mapping techniques and ocean observation devices.

Outside the Classroom

In addition to attending classes, students will have many opportunities to visit local historic/scenic sites and to participate in evening social activities.

Housing

Students will be staying in residence on Memorial University’s campus, which is only a 20-minute walk from downtown St. John’s and its beautiful harbour. The residence is apartment-style, where 4 women or 4 men share a kitchen and a bathroom. Each student will have a small, private bedroom with a lock. Meals are not included.

Participants’ Requirement

Aged 19 and up.

Please return completed application to MI (sonia.ho@mi.mun.ca) by April 12, 2017. A non-refundable CAD 400 deposit is due May 5, 2017. Details of payment options will be included in acceptance letter.
