Funded/Partially Funded International Opportunities Outside of MI

Below is a list of some of the ongoing international mobility opportunities being offered outside of the Marine Institute that are either fully or partially funded. There are certainly many more opportunities available that are not listed here, but this can hopefully serve as a good place to start if you are exploring what opportunities exist beyond MI.

1) Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada

The Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada (CDF) currently has a wide variety of volunteer opportunities! Domestic and international economy airfare, ground transport, visa, travel insurance, out of country accommodation, and a meal/incidental allowance will be covered by CDF for these positions.  Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident. 2) EQWiP HUBS Volunteer Placements

The EQWIB HUBS Volunteer Placements Program offers 3-12 month opportunities for Canadians and Permanent Residents between the age of 20 and 49 years to volunteer in a variety of countries. Compensation is available to cover accommodations and living expenses. Click HERE for more information.

3) Aga Khan Internship Program

The Aga Khan University offers an International Internship Program and a Summer Internship Program which provide paid and unpaid opportunities between 6 weeks and 12 months for students to intern in East Africa, the Middle East, Central and South Asia.

4) UAS7 Internship Program

The UAS7 Internship Program offers 2-6 month opportunities for Degree-seeking students to volunteer in Germany. A full-tuition waiver is available. Click HERE for more information.

5) WUSC - World University Service of Canada

WUSC offers international volunteer opportunities for Canadians and Permanent Residents between the ages of 18 and 70 years to volunteer in Africa, Asia and the Americas for 3 to 24 months. A monthly allowance is available to cover accommodations and living expenses. Click HERE for more information.

6) International Volunteering Opportunities with Uniterra

Uniterra offers a Long and Short Term Volunteer program as well as a Students Without Borders Internship program which provide international opportunities of up to 12 months for Canadians and Permanent Residents between the ages of 18 and 70 years.

7) International Volunteering Opportunities with Cuso

Cuso International offers various opportunities to volunteer domestically or internationally in Africa, Asia, Latin America or the Caribbean for up to 24 months. A monthly allowance is available to cover accommodations and living expenses. Click HERE for more information.

8) United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS)

UNOPS offers opportunities between 4 to 6 months for students to intern in various locations. A onetime lump sum of USD 500 is available to cover travel expenses. Click HERE for more information.

9) United Nations Volunteers

UN Volunteers offers opportunities of 6 to 12 months for individuals of at least 25 years of age. Opportunities to volunteer in your home country or abroad are available. Click HERE for more information.

10) Mitacs - Research Internships

Mitacs offers opportunities for college and university (graduate) full-time students for 4+ months. A stipend starting at $10,000 per four-month period is available, with postdocs eligible for up to two years of funding. Click HERE for more information.

11) International Experience Canada

Memorial University is a recognized organization under the International Experience Canada Program. The IEC program offers three streams of work permits:

  1. Working/holiday and open work permit: Allows you to work in a variety of positions and explore some of the most beautiful locations in the world.
  2. Co-op work permit: Allows you to work abroad as part of your academic program.
  3. Young professionals and employer specific work permits: Allows you to extend your work permit for an additional 12 months in a foreign country, working for a specific employer.

12) Other organizations implementing the International Youth Internship Program (IYIP)

The Marine Institute is just one of many organizations in Canada implementing IYIP. IYIP offers 6+ month opportunities for Canadians between the age of 19 and 30 years to volunteer in a variety of countries. Compensation is available to cover accommodations and living expenses. 13) Other organizations implementing the International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative

There are a number of organizations beside the Marine Institute that were also selected to implement the IAYI initiative. This initiative offers 4+ month opportunities for Indigenous Canadian youth between the age of 18 and 35 years to volunteer in a variety of countries.
