ACOA Edge Project

The Marine Institute (MI), with the support of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), has set sail on a new international initiative aimed at improving export opportunities in the education and environmental sectors for the Marine Institute and regional partner businesses. The Export Diversification and Growth in the Oceans and Educations Sector (EDGE) project will explore and expand global partnerships and contracts related to integrated education systems, including pathways from K-12 to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to University, as well as adaptation to climate change and coastal sustainability. MI will build off recent successful projects with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), African Development Bank (AfDB), and Asian Development Bank to increase project activity and diversify funding portfolios in the Caribbean, South East Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Opportunities will also be explored through International Financial Institutions (IFI) such as the World Bank, international foundations, Global Affairs Canada (GAC), other multilateral funders, including the United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID), and private partnerships with industry.

This two-year, $595,000 project ($446,250 from ACOA and $148,750 from the Marine Institute) will result in up to five regional partners mentored in international business development with IFIs, up to seven partnership agreements formed with international institutes and/or firms, up to $4 million in international project revenue generated over five years, and support Marine Institute students, graduates, faculty and staff participation in work placements, internships, and/or international project work overseas. International student attraction and international outbound mobility will also receive support in order to drive MI's mission in becoming a World Ocean's Institute.

MI will support IFI workshops for Newfoundland and Labrador and Atlantic Canadian companies and institutes in the fall of 2017 in order to showcase our regional expertise in education and environmental sectors. Key contacts from IFIs will join and present in these workshops to build knowledge and skills in identifying and bidding on IFI contracts and forming strategic partnerships.

MI will target business development opportunities in the Caribbean, in partnership with the Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Industry Association and the Newfoundland and Labrador Oil and Gas Industries Association, as well as the University of West Indies' Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES). MI will also build off of existing partnerships in aquaculture in Indonesia and explore work in the education sector in Kenya and Tanzania through its partnership with a consortium of Canadian colleges and institutes.

Are you a business or educational institute in Atlantic Canada that would like to partner with MI in international initiatives? If so, please contact Ian Murdoch and we will be in touch!
