OSRU Facilities and Equipment

OSRU's facilities and equipment include a cold human immersion laboratory, the Marine Base boat launch facility, an indoor training tank and environmental theatre, a fire fighting facility and outdoor test tank, virtual marine helicopter ditching simulator and human performance lab equipment.

Cold Human Immersion Laboratory

The lab can accommodate human participants or thermal manikins and is serviced by a data acquisition system and data storage RAID. The water tank measures 4.5m L x 2.5m W x 2m D and has circulation systems capable of generating surface currents up to 0.5m/s. The water tank can be covered to provide a dry-only environment if needed.

Fire Fighting Facility and Outdoor Test Tank

The fire fighting facility and outdoor test tank is located in Foxtrap, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Human Performance Lab Equipment

The Human Performance Lab is outfitted with equipment for measuring three dimensional human motion (OPTOTRAK), eye movements, force generation under water, and basic human physiological, psychometric, and sensory performance.

Indoor Training Tank and Environmental Theatre

The indoor training tank and environmental theatre is located in Foxtrap, Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Offshore Safety and Survival Centre Research Unit has a variety of capabilities, whether at sea or in a labratory setting.

Virtual Marine Helicopter Ditching Simulator

The Helicopter Ditching Simulator on motion bed generates the experience of a helicopter takeoff, the in-flight briefs, and the on-the-water steps to follow a controlled ditch.
