Office of Research

Today, teams of highly qualified researchers, technical staff, support staff and graduate students are using world class infrastructure to answer research questions of local, national and international importance in the areas of:
Through the School of Fisheries, MI is a world leader in fisheries related research. Work done in the school and its three research centres answer questions all along the fisheries value chain.
The maritime environment off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador is, by nature, a harsh operating environment. Research conducted in the School of Maritime Studies (SMS) focuses on what it means to operate in the maritime environment, with a specific competency in harsh ocean environments.
There are inherent dangers working and playing on the ocean. Despite best efforts to ensure a safe environment there will be times when the unthinkable happens and survival, rescue and recovery become paramount.
We know more about the surface of the moon than we do about the ocean floor. Research conducted by the School of Ocean Technology takes aim at unlocking the mysteries that lie on the surface of, and deep below, the ocean.
The Office of Research and Development supports the strategic growth of the Marine Institute’s research enterprise.
