Since our beginnings in 1964 the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) has worked closely with industry to answer research questions of importance to the economic development of Newfoundland and Labrador

Today, teams of highly qualified researchers, technical staff, support staff and graduate students are using world class infrastructure to answer research questions of local, national and international importance in the areas of:

Fisheries

Through the School of Fisheries, MI is a world leader in fisheries related research. Work done in the school and its three research centres answer questions all along the fisheries value chain.

The maritime environment off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador is, by nature, a harsh operating environment. Research conducted in the School of Maritime Studies (SMS) focuses on what it means to operate in the maritime environment, with a specific competency in harsh ocean environments.
