As one of MI’s main conduits to industry, our Applied Research and Training Centres are home to some of the world’s most unique oceans related research facilities and expertise. With decades of experience working with industry, our Centres are able to tackle research questions of varying size and complexity.

Fisheries

Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research (CFER)

The Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research (CFER) mandate is to focus research on Newfoundland and Labrador fisheries and the sustainability of stocks, offer research and training opportunities to graduate students both locally and internationally, collaborate with the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture and Fisheries and Oceans Canada for research activities and fisheries management and collaborate with other researchers and institutions within Canada and worldwide.

Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources (CSAR)

The Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources (CSAR) is an applied research unit within the School of Fisheries at the Fisheries and Marine Institute, Memorial University. Recognized as Canada’s experts in fish capture, our team has core strengths in fishing gear design and testing, conservation engineering, fisheries biology, fish capture behaviour, and mechanical engineering.

Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development (CASD)

The Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development (CASD) and its team of experts’ act as a catalyst for innovation by bringing science and technology to the seafood processing, marine bioprocessing and aquaculture industries.

Centre for Marine Simulation (CMS)

The Centre for Marine Simulation (CMS) is located in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, the capital city of Newfoundland and Labrador and the forefront of Canada's ocean technology industry. The city boasts one of the most sophisticated and comprehensive concentrations of ocean technology organizations anywhere in Canada.

Ocean Safety

Offshore Safety and Survival Centre (OSSC)

The Offshore Safety and Survival Centre (OSSC) delivers a comprehensive range of safety, survival and emergency response training for offshore petroleum, marine transportation, fishing and land based industries. Through its satellite Safety and Emergency Response Training (SERT) Centre located in Stephenville, it also offers emergency response training to the firefighting and aviation industries. The OSSC works closely with industry, researchers and industry associations to improve safety technologies and practices and can design and customized courses to meet the specific training needs of its clients.

Safety and Emergency Response Training (SERT) Centre

Located in Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Safety and Emergency Response Training Centre (SERT) is one of the premiere fire training facilities in Canada with the capability and equipment to provide Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting, Structural, Marine and Industrial Firefighting training. The SERT Centre also delivers the Marine Institute's Fire Rescue Technical Certificate program.

Centre for Applied Ocean Technology (CTec)

At the Centre for Applied Ocean Technology (CTec) we collaborate with industry and others on the development and application of technology for the practical benefit of all sectors of the maritime community.
