Important Mandatory Changes to Safety Training for Laboratories (All Students)

All students exposed to chemicals in laboratories must complete mandatory safety training prior to entering labs. Newfoundland and Labrador’s Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) legislation has been recently amended. To accommodate this change, two new safety courses have been developed to reflect the changes in WHMIS legislation: SC 1807 - Safety in Science Lab (Lab Safety) and SC 1808 – WHMIS. Students are required to have successfully completed the updated course(s) prior to entering a lab, therefore, all current students with laboratory components in their program MUST complete these two courses.

Please review the following prior to registering for the FALL 2019 semester:

  • If you intend to take a laboratory course in your program that requires you to work with or in close proximity to hazardous products: You must complete SC 1807 and SC 1808.
  • Students can register through Memorial Self-Service using SC 1807 - Safety in Science Lab CRN 63122 and SC 1808 – WHMIS CRN 69678.
  • The courses are currently open for the fall 2019 semester and will be available online through the Centre for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL). Students can log into Brightspace with their my.mun.ca login ID to access the course(s).
  • To be considered successfully completed, a minimum grade of 80% is required for each course.
  • All first year students MUST register for these courses. Students beyond first year who have not completed these courses in the last academic year will also be required to complete these courses.

1. Is there a cost associated with SC1807 and SC1808.

No. These courses are offered at no additional costs to students.

2. What is the passing grade for SC1807 and SC1808?

The passing grade for both courses is 80%.

3. What if I do not pass these courses?

Students will get three attempts to pass these courses prior to the deadline. If you do not pass the course after three attempts the test will need to be reset manually to attempt the course again. Students who require a reset will need to contact labsafety@mun.ca to do so.

4. What if I did WHMIS in the past?

Due to the changes in Newfoundland and Labrador’s Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) legislation, there will be no transfer credits or substitutions granted for SC1807 and SC1808.

5. Will these courses show up on my transcript?

Students who successfully complete SC1807 and SC1808 will see a PAS on their transcripts.

6. How long does it take to complete these courses?

Each of these courses can be completed in approximately one hour.
