The MI Model Boat Race event was first held in May of 2012 to raise awareness of the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Systems Design programs at MI. Building on the success and positive feedback of this event, the 2nd annual Model Boat race was held on October 26, 2013, at the MI flume tank.
All high schools in the eastern region of the English School District were invited to send a team to participate. Radio control and propulsion systems were supplied to the participating schools, with teams building their own hulls and rudders, and installing the propulsion system provided.
10 teams participated in the latest event, racing their boats against the clock on a course set out in the flume tank. Several trophies were up for grabs including ‘Fastest Boat’ and the much coveted ‘Overall Winner’, won this year by Clarenville High School.

The Marine Institute took part in a day of Dragon Boat races in June 2013 at Octagon Pond in Paradise. The School of Maritime Studies was represented by Cathy Dutton, Darryl Budgell, Chris Callahan, Bob Mercer and John Tucker. The team failed to make the top 3 for the championship race but did place a respectable fourth.
2014 is the second year that MI entered a team in the annual Avalon Dragon's "Paddle In Paradise" event. On August 16th 29 teams competed against the clock for a place in the final race. Each team raced twice and the total time of the two races was used to determine overall standing. The MI "Surging Waves" had impressive times of 1:00:58 and 0:57:00 which placed them 4th overall.
The event raised over $45 000.00 of which the Surging Waves contributed $2790.00. The MI Team contribution was raised from a Cake Walk and Bake Sale, a Car Wash and sponsorship of individual team members. A big thank you to everyone who gave their time and money to make this event a success.
