I am a Master Mariner and a graduate of the Marine Institute’s Nautical Science program and also have a B.Ed (post-secondary degree) from MUN.
Prior to teaching at MI, I have worked 10 years in the shipping industry, primarily in the oil and gas sector on board seismic survey and platform supply vessels.
My primary roles at MI are the development and delivery of industrial response short courses and program chair for the Transport Canada nautical program.

I have completed courses in post-secondary education and I am currently working toward a bachelor’s degree.
My career at sea involved extensive travel of the Great Lakes region on self-unloaders and bulk carriers.
My main teaching area is marine engineering knowledge, however I have also taught electrotechnology and offshore safety.

I hold a first class marine engineer COC >3000 KW, as well as a post graduate degree in maritime technical operations (Liverpool John Moores University, UK).
I began my sea going career up on completion of a four years marine engineering program and by sailing on various ships.
Being a maritime instructor, ship building site manager and an offshore company’s technical manager are the titles of the jobs that I have worked since stopped sailing.

I am formally educated in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Systems Design from Memorial University of Newfoundland and secured eighteen years of experience with ship and oil rig engineering and production prior to teaching at MI.
I fulfilled many roles in the shipbuilding process; from various levels in most engineering disciplines to varying levels on the production end.
I gained experience in working with regulatory bodies and inspectors and in the writing of specifications, technical reports, and procedures.

In addition to being a graduate of the Marine Institute with technical diplomas in Marine Engineering Systems Design and Naval Architecture, I hold an engineering degree from MUN in Ocean & Naval Architecture.
Before joining the Marine Institute I worked for a number of marine consultancy firms finishing up as lead Naval Architect for two boatyards in NL.
I hold a Yachmaster certificate from the MCA in the UK and am currently working to increase the Marine Institute’s offering of courses for pleasure boat operators.

As a Master Mariner I spent several years at sea prior to taking a teaching position here at the Marine Institute. My main teaching area is ship operations and management.

I am currently Program Chair of the Nautical Science Program.
I started the NS Program myself at the College of Fisheries, Navigation, Marine Engineering and Electronics and graduated from the new Marine Institute in 1988.
I spent 10 years at sea sailing on a variety of ships and I’ve been involved in many adventurous voyages from the Arctic to Antarctica and from the Galapagos Islands to the Persian Gulf (Operation Desert Storm).
I have been teaching at MI since 1999. My main teaching areas are Navigation Safety and General Seamanship.
I also supervise the Onboard Training Record Books (logbooks) of cadets on at-sea work term assignments.

I have a Transport Canada license for Master 500GT NC, Chief Mate Intermediate Voyage/3000GT FG & OOW Unlimited. I have a Gold Seal Fire Fighter 2 certificate for Fire Officer 1.
I am a Nationally Registered Incident Safety Officer. I am currently teaching within the Bridge Watch and Nautical Science programs and have also instructed for 10 years at the Marine Institute’s Offshore Safety and Survival Centre.

I have over 35 years’ experience in the marine Industry both at sea and ashore, including 15 years as Master mostly on container vessels trading worldwide.
I have vast experience on PCCs, Combo-vessels and Bulk Carriers. I hold both U.K. and Canadian Master Mariner Certifications.
I have been a P&I surveyor, pre-purchase inspector and also have been a Ship Manager, Port Captain as well as experience as a ship agent. Currently teaching the SEN-1 course and Navigation.

I am a graduate of the University of Plymouth, Maine Maritime Academy, Memorial University of Newfoundland and the University of Toronto with degrees in maritime management, economics, business and education.
I hold a valid master mariner foreign-going licence from Transport Canada and have designations in risk management, project management and insurance.
I have worked at sea on numerous vessel types in a global trade in all ranks, and ashore as a marine consultant.
My current teaching is centered on maritime economics and risk management and my research interests are in maritime transportation in Arctic waters.
I am involved and work with Transport Canada, the Transportation Appeals Tribunal of Canada, the Auditor General of Canada, the Nautical Institute, the Company of Master Mariners of Canada and NATO.

I graduated the Nautical Science Program at the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland and hold a Master Mariners certificate of competency from Transport Canada.
My seagoing experience has been on Self Unloading Bulk Carriers, Geared Bulk Carriers, Oil Tankers, General Cargo and Coast Guard ships. I have been teaching at MI since 2014, I currently teach Cargo Operations and Seamanship in the Nautical Science program as well as Cargo 2 and 3 online for those preparing for Transport Canada examinations.

I teach primarily in the Naval Architecture program and in recent years I have lead the third year design projects.
Prior to starting at the Marine Institute I worked in the private sector in both design offices and shipyards across North America.
A significant portion of my industry experience has been in project management and advanced structural analysis using Finite Element Modeling.

I am a graduate of the Marine Institute’s Naval Architecture program and after graduation in 1994 I worked in yacht design for more than 12 years, first as a junior naval architect, then progressing to engineering manager.
In 2006 I completed a master degree in business from Warwick University (UK). I am still somewhat active in yacht design and am particularly interested in production processes and how they may be improved.

I graduated from the Marine Engineering Program in 1996. The program helped me to realize my true passion of machining and industrial manufacturing.
I received a Journeyman Machinist Certificate in 2001.
I have worked in various machine shops on the Avalon Peninsula including Memorial University with both manual and CNC machines.
Since 2009, I have taught with the College of the North Atlantic in Qatar and St. John’s before joining the Marine Institute faculty.

Prior to becoming an instructor at MI, my work experience involved secondary and adult basic education within the culturally rich Newfoundland aboriginal environment.
In 1991, I began working at MI where my teaching focus has been in mathematics and communication skills and spans both the certificate and diploma level programs.

I have degrees in both Mathematics and Education from Memorial University and have worked at MI for 15 years.
I also Chair the Technician Training Program offered through the Department of National Defense.
I have taught at the postsecondary level for almost 20 years on such topics as precalculus, calculus, finite and discrete mathematics, linear algebra, vector calculus, differential equations and statistics.
My academic interests include the pedagogy of mathematics education as well as number and chaos theory.

I graduated from Georgian College with a diploma (Marine Navigation) subsequently working on both bulk carriers and oil tankers.
I became interested in engineering and received a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Queen’s University and then an M.Eng. in Ocean Engineering from Memorial.
After working in both the private sector and government for several years I joined MI where I teach in the diploma, bachelor and master’s programs.

I am a regular instructor in the Bachelor of Technology Technical Project and Report courses offered online, as well as an instructor at various levels in the classroom.
I have been privileged to serve on the Paper Committees for both the IAMU 2012 and IMLA 2013 conferences held at the Institute, and also represented the School of Maritime Studies as one of several delegates from the Marine Institute to the ACCC conference held in Edmonton, Alberta in 2011.
