I am currently involved with Newfoundland and Labrador Aboriginal Games basketball teams that compete in the North American Indigenous Games. I also enjoy the odd game of chess and like to challenge myself in a number of areas. Both teaching and learning are passions of mine!
Dr. Robert Brown is a Professional Engineer (Naval Architecture) and Senior Research Scientist in the Marine Institute’s School of Maritime Studies, Memorial University of Newfoundland. For over 22 years, Rob has studied and published extensively on human behaviour and equipment performance in maritime and Arctic emergency scenarios – evacuation, survival, and search and rescue. Through national and international collaborations (e.g. Ocean Frontier Institute’s FOCI project, EU Horizon 2020’s ARCSAR project, EU Framework 7’s SAFEGUARD project, Svalbard SARex Projects) he has developed numerical models to predict human and system performance for emergency situations.
Rob has contributed substantially to the development of national and international regulations and standards which govern passenger ship evacuation; personal protective equipment for helicopter transportation; life-saving appliances in the Arctic; and group and personal survival equipment for the Arctic. A regular reviewer for scientific journals, Rob also serves as an editor for two international journals and has been an organizing committee member for numerous international conferences.

As of 2010 I worked in the Finance Office within the Marine Institute and in 2023 transitioned to Unit Coordinator within the Ocean Safety Research Unit with the School of Maritime Studies. As a former accounting clerk I brought my experience, knowledge, and skills to work for the unit whether it be for assisting those with travel, reimbursements or purchasing, to being involved in onboarding graduate students and assisting them throughout the stages of their program including setting up or renewing stipends, enacting program changes, coordinating comprehensive examinations, or addressing questions regarding to processes, policies, and procedures. In addition, I’m actively involved in managing grants, hiring, payroll submissions, budgeting, and everything in between. If you have a question, I’m the best place to start and am happy to help.
Dr. Liz Sanli is an Educator and Researcher in the School of Maritime Studies. Her research focuses on performance, learning, and behaviour change in complex, work-related contexts such as seafaring, firefighting, and fish harvesting. She studies how components of training such as instruction, demonstrations, feedback, and practice organization can impact how well, and for how long, skills are retained. She also studies the roles of training and performance contexts (e.g., social, physical, & psychological environments) on learning and retention of skills and knowledge. This research informs her course design and teaching. Dr. Sanli is a Sr. Researcher at MI and is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Brock University. Dr. Sanli holds a Ph.D. in Kinesiology from McMaster University, an M.Sc. In Applied Health Science, Kinesiology and a B.Kin. from Brock University, as well as a B.Ed. from Memorial University.
I’ve been with the Marine Institute for more than 18 years, starting out as a Clerk III before moving into my current role as Administrative Officer in 2011. Most of my work to date has been with Industrial Response training and Fire Rescue Technical Certificate program, where I’ve had the chance to support students, work alongside instructors, and connect with industry partners. It’s been a rewarding experience, allowing me to grow with the program and build strong relationships along the way. Along with my work experience, I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Community Studies and a Certificate in Office Administration, which have given me a strong foundation in communication, organization, and teamwork.
