The Marine Institute has a broad range of Programs from which to choose. Be sure you meet all of the Admission Requirements and Physical Requirements (please see the Academic Calendar‌) for your program before you apply.

Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Post-Graduate Certificate and Certificate Programs

Include documents required for your general admission, and if applicable, a supplementary application for your program of study.

  • Include the applicable application fee.
  • Apply as early as possible.
  • Applications should be received by April 15th or by March 1st for International Students.
  • Applications received following these dates will be assessed as resources and space allow.

*Please note: Joint Diplomas of Technology/Bachelor of Technology, Diplomas of Technology and Technical Certificates have a fall intake only.

Degree Programs

Master’s Programs

Be sure to review the application instructions for Memorial University’s School of Graduate Studies.

  • Please note: The deadline for applications for the Master of Maritime Management and Master of Technology Management is May 15 for Fall Admission and deadline for applications for the Master of Marine Studies is June 15 for Fall Admission.
Transport Canada Programs

The Marine Institute offers a variety of Transport Canada programs on campus and through online learning each semester. Submit a completed paper application.

International Students

International students should begin the application process much earlier. Due to time constraints and immigration processes, applications cannot be considered beyond April 1st for September enrolment.

Please note that international students are required to pay a $120 application fee.

Apply for Housing

The Marine Institute is only a few minutes from Memorial University’s St. John’s campus residences. You can choose to stay at Paton College’s ten residence houses or at Burton’s Pond Apartments.

There is a separate application for student housing. You do not need to wait to be accepted by the Marine Institute to apply for on-campus housing. We recommend that you apply early.

What to Expect After You Apply

Soon you will receive information from us regarding the status of your application, your admission and details about scholarships and awards. Once you are accepted, look for regular correspondence from us that will help you register for your classes.

Learn about Scholarships and Student Aid

Diploma and advanced diploma students are automatically considered for entrance scholarships on their application for admission. Students should also consult the section in the for more scholarship listings and application guidelines.

For financial assistance, Canadian students may apply at Canlearn. Applicants from Newfoundland and Labrador may apply at the Department of Advanced Education and Skills website.

Select and Register for your Classes

A month before classes begin, you’ll receive instructions on how to register for classes online. You will need a user ID and PIN to login.

The user ID will be your 9-digit student number, which is included in all of the mail that we send to you, and your initial PIN with be your birth year and day (YYYYDD). We’ll also send you details about Orientation TEMP - a one-day event that get you ready for life as a MI student.

Pay your Fees

You are required to pay all fees prior to the first day of classes for any semester. Fees can be paid online using either Visa or MasterCard. You can also pay by cheque, money order or in person at the Registrar’s Office.
