Since the Lieutenant Commander (Retired) Anthony Green Ayre Bursary Endowment Fund was established at the Marine Institute in 2015 ten deserving students have already received the bursary.

The endowment was made possible through a gift from the Estate of Anthony Green Ayre who joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the outbreak of World War II and served in the Atlantic and Pacific from 1941-1945.

Following the war he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and became the Commanding Officer of the Memorial University of Newfoundland Naval Training Division. He was also an area officer of the Sea Cadets and devoted to community service.

In 2018 this lasting gift to Marine Institute students was featured in Memorial University’s Gazette, titled Staying the course, Ayre bursary creates legacy for Marine Institute graduates. Among many lasting impacts of this gift is it provided the very first bursary awarded to students in MI’s Bridge Watch Program technical certificate, a program where students can acquire academic skills, marine safety training, sea experience, and hands-on training in approximately one year to become a deckhand in the marine industry.
