Am I permitted to access the MI Campus?

The University announcement on Feb 9th indicated that all teaching and learning activity will transition to online delivery from Feb 10th – Feb 23rd. As February 10th MI will be transitioning (where possible) to online learning until February 23rd. Programs with essential on-campus components including shops, labs and technical training that cannot be facilitated online are suspended for the time being, further updates on the completion of these components will be forthcoming. MI students can refer to the key contacts available online and also email studentsupport@mi.mun.ca with any immediate questions or concerns, we are here to help!

During this timeframe students will not be permitted on campus unless authorized.

 

I was scheduled to have on-campus tests, if we are remote what will I do now?

Your individual instructors will have the most up to date information on your scheduled tests and evaluations. Please connect with them directly on Brightspace or by email if an announcement is not made to your class.

 

I have questions/concerns about my program in regard to the Winter semester, who should I contact?

Your Program Chair has the most up to date details concerning the operations of your program for the winter semester. If you are unsure who your Program Chair is you can look up your program in the key contacts list. If you have additional questions, please email studentsupport@mi.mun.ca.

 

What are the COVID-19 restrictions in place in Newfoundland?

Are the Help Centers still available remotely?

Yes! There are two MS Teams meetings established for daytime and evening help centers for Math and Physics. The links to these online spaces are in your Math and Physics Brightspace shells. Online Math Help is also accessible by emailing service at mathhelp@mi.mun.ca

 

What supports are available for students at this time?

The following services at the Marine Institute are remotely available to students during this time:

The Student Wellness and Counselling Centre continues to remain open and staff are providing services to students via telephone and virtual sessions, with the exception of some physician and nurse appointments. See full details here.

Students with COVID-19 questions and concerns should visit www.811healthline.ca or call 811 directly. Do not arrive in person at the Student Wellness and Counselling Centre if you are experiencing a cough, fever, difficulty breathing, and have travelled outside the province or have had contact with someone who has the COVID-19 virus.

Counselling appointments will be delivered remotely. Students who wish to book counselling appointments can call 864-8500 and select option 5 to book a remote session with a counsellor.

A reminder to all students that the Student Wellness and Counselling Centre (SWCC) website offers a number of online and phone-based community mental health and wellness supports. Please refer to the detailed list of resources here: www.mun.ca/studentwellness/supports-services/OnlineResources.php if you need remote support.

Do I need a Marine Institute Computer Account?

Yes. Computer accounts are required to access any internal computer system at the Marine Institute and are unique to the Marine Institute campus. These accounts give you access to shared drive spaces, instructor-provided course files, software, and personal drive space for storage of your files. Your Marine Institute email will also be generated when you set up your computer account. This email will be important as it is a key communication tool!

 

How do I get a Marine Institute Computer Account?

  • New Students can get their Computer Accounts online here
  • Returning students that have forgotten their computer account password can reset it here
  • Students who have any issue with their computer account can contact the ICT HelpDesk at ict.helpdesk@mi.mun.ca. The HelpDesk hours of operation are 8:30 am – 4:30 pm Monday – Friday

What is the difference between remote and online learning?

Remote Courses

Remote courses are face-to-face courses that have been adapted to be delivered at a distance in times of disruption when students and instructors cannot meet on campus. The instructor may decide to use online tools, including Brightspace, to replace face-to-face instruction; course activities and materials may also be modified accordingly. Students may be asked to join the instructor and classmates online at specific points in the term as a replacement for face-to-face meetings and discussions.

Online Courses

Online courses have been carefully designed to be delivered entirely over the Internet using course sites in Brightspace. The course sites often include high quality, customized videos, interactive components and resources that help with learning the course content. Online courses are not self-paced; instructors post deadlines for work and expect students to keep up on reading and other activities required to successfully complete the course. Students may be asked to join the instructor and classmates online at specific points in the term. Students need to consider the technical requirements needed to fully participate in an online course.

 

What is the attendance policy for the winter semester?

The Marine Institute academic calendar indicates the campus attendance policy. That policy will still be in effect for the Winter term. There is an expectation that students will attend live lectures and spend time interacting with and completing course content by logging into their courses in Brightspace.

 

How do I purchase course materials and supplies?

You can contact the MI Campustore from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. NST Monday-Friday to order course materials, supplies, apparel and giftware for curb-side pick up or shipment. Course materials and items of interest, such as clothing, must be pre-ordered before you visit the MI Campustore. 

Winter 2021 semester booklists are now available to review the required materials for your specific program and any needed supplies such as maps, drafting kits, etc. Call (709) 778-0473 or email campusstore@mi.mun.ca to place your order as soon as possible to receive your materials. Visa and MasterCard for credit card payment are welcome. Please indicate if you would like to have your order shipped to you or held for curb-side pick-up.

 

How can I contact my instructors?

Students can anticipate that instructors will be active in their courses and both be present for live sessions and in the Brightspace course shell for active contact and that they will also be responsive to questions and concerns through email.

 

Are the MUN Libraries open remotely?

The MUN Libraries are open and accessible remotely.

Our libraries have an extensive collection of online resources, such as databases, ebooks, e-journals, streaming film collections, and e-reserves, to support teaching, learning, and research. My program has on-campus components, how do I obtain a travel exemption to enter Newfoundland?

Memorial University is coordinating the entry of all students requiring a travel exemption. There are detailed processes for domestic (outside of the Atlantic Canada) and international learners More information on this process is available here.

 

I am having difficulty obtaining a travel exemption, who do I contact?

We appreciate that this is a challenging time and that even with the detailed process that has been outlined there may be questions and concerns. Please feel free to email studentsupport@mi.mun.ca if you require additional support.

 

Will I have to isolate once arriving in Newfoundland?

Students travelling to NL from outside of Atlantic Canada will be required to obtain a travel exemption and self-isolate for 14 days. There are a number of self-isolation supports in place and details of those supports are available here www.mun.ca/international/arrivals-20-21/self-isolation-supports/
