Marine Institute Winter 2020 Semester Frequently Asked Questions

Note: Marine Institute students enrolled in the Bachelor of Technology or the Bachelor of Marine Studies programs should also consult the Frequently Asked Questions document posted by Memorial University for information about deadlines, schedule changes, etc. specific to degree programs.

Certificate and Diploma students can contact the Marine Institute Registrar’s Office at Leslie.Noftall@mi.mun.ca for specific questions or concerns about their program.

Industrial clients should contact the appropriate centre for any questions about rescheduling courses.

When will the Marine Institute reopen for classes?
The Marine Institute, including its Offshore Safety and Survival Centre and the Holyrood Marine Base, have resumed normal operations as of Monday, Jan. 27.

How will the Winter 2020 semester be affected?
In consultation with academic and institutional leadership, program chairs and students, the following modifications will be implemented for all technical certificate, technician diplomas, diplomas of technology and advanced diploma students:

  • The one-day winter break scheduled for February 21 will be maintained
  • The end of the semester will be moved from Friday, April 3, to Thursday April 9, to make up four days
  • The exam period will be moved from April 6 – 14 to April 14 – 18
  • The official release of grades will be moved from April 17 to April 21

Will the Marine Institute mid-term break be rescheduled or cancelled?
The Marine Institute mid-term break will remain as originally scheduled.

Will the end of the Marine Institute Winter 2020 semester be moved?
The end date for Marine Institute Winter 2020 schedule will move from Friday, April 3, to Thursday April 9, to make up four days.

Will the Marine Institute winter 2020 exam period be moved?
The exam period for the winter 2020 semester is moved from April 6 – 14 to April 14 – 18.

Is the drop and add course deadline extended?
The following modifications have been made to winter semester deadlines for dropping courses and receiving refunds:

  • January 28 – New deadline for students to drop courses and receive a 100 per cent refund of tuition fees and student union fees for the winter semester. No student union fees will be refunded after this date.
  • February 3 – Last day for students to drop courses and receive a 50 per cent refund of winter semester tuition fees.
  • February 10 – Last day to drop courses and receive a 25 per cent refund of tuition fees. No winter semester tuition refunds will be granted after this date.

Will safety training for Bridge Watch students go ahead next week?
Bridge watch students will have regular classes on Monday, Jan. 27, 2020 at the Marine Institute Ridge Road campus. Class schedules for the safety training, which will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 28 as originally scheduled, will be distributed. The Marine Institute is working to ensure students meet the academic requirements of their program by the scheduled end date.

Will MI extend the application deadline for Winter 2020 Scholarships?
The deadline for Winter 2020 scholarship applications is now Friday, Jan. 31, at 5:00 p.m.

Will the MISU health and dental opt-out deadline be extended?
Yes, the insurance provider will keep its website open until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, for those who wish to opt out.

Industrial Clients

I was scheduled to start courses at the Offshore Safety and Survival Centre during the closure.  Will my course be rescheduled?
OSSC will contact clients once employees have returned to their operations to reschedule clients into upcoming alternative training dates.

All OSSC courses scheduled to start Jan. 27, 2020, will go ahead as scheduled.

I was scheduled to start courses at the Centre for Marine Simulation during the closure.  Will my course be rescheduled?
CMS will contact clients once employees have returned to their operations to reschedule clients into upcoming alternative training dates.

All CMS courses scheduled to start Jan. 27, 2020, will go ahead as scheduled.

What about other courses scheduled for the week of Jan. 27?
Advanced Training for Oil Tanker Cargo Operation scheduled Jan. 20-29 is cancelled.  The Marine Institute will contact clients to rebook their course.

Simulated Electronic Navigation Level 1 resumed on Monday, Jan. 27.

Meteorology Level 2, originally scheduled to start Monday, Jan. 20, will now begin on Monday, Jan. 27.
