Mandatory Courses

Safety in the Science Lab (SC 1807) WHMIS (SC 1808)

You will access these courses on Brightspace using your my.mun.ca login ID.

At the Marine Institute, safety is an integral part of all programs. As a first-year technical certificate or diploma of technology student, it is mandatory for you to complete two safety courses before on-campus labs begin for the semester. When you registered for your fall courses, you should have also enrolled in two specific courses: SC 1807 - Safety in Science Lab (Lab Safety) and SC 1808 - WHMIS.

Both courses are designed to be completed in a short duration, usually taking no more than two hours each. Each course consists of a series of presentations followed by a quiz. To successfully complete the courses, you must achieve a minimum score of 80% on the quizzes.

Once you have finished a course, it is crucial that you print the proof of completion document, available under the "awards" section in Brightspace. You must present this document to your instructor before gaining access to the labs. Ensuring you have completed these courses and obtained the proof of completion is vital for your safety and eligibility to participate in the labs.

Please note that SC 1807 and SC 1808 only need to be completed once during your certificate or diploma program.

Note: If you do not have these courses completed by Tuesday, September 3rd, you will have to complete them in the computer lab during orientation.

Questions about laboratory safety and the SC 1807 and SC 1808 courses can be directed to labsafety@mun.ca

Sexual Violence Awareness/Prevention (SVM 0204)

As a newly admitted student to Memorial University, you are registered for the Sexual Violence Awareness and Prevention online course, SVM 0204. It is mandatory for you to successfully complete the course with a grade of at least 80%. If you do not pass the course with a minimum of 80%, you will NOT be able to register for the following semester. To start the course, please follow these steps:

  1. Login to Brightspace using your @mun.ca credentials
  2. Scroll down the page and Select “View all courses” on the left corner
  3. Select SVM 0204 (Sexual Violence Awareness and Prevention) course shell
  4. Click “Course Content” to start the course.

SVM 0204 should take approximately 20 to 30 minutes to complete. You can stop and come back to complete the course at another time in between but it must fully be completed for submission at the end. The course provides education through various methods including informational content, questions, activities, scenarios, and a video about sexual consent. Information is also provided on additional campus and community resources.

If you require assistance or accommodation regarding this course, please contact the Sexual Harassment Office by phone at 709-864-8199 (St. John’s campuses) or email shoffice@mun.ca.

If you do not have the Sexual Violence Awareness and Prevention course completed before Tuesday, September 3rd, you will have to complete this course during orientation.

Academic Integrity (INTG 1000)

Integrity 1000 is a required non-credit course which must be completed in your first term of studies at any campus of Memorial University.

As a first-year student, you will automatically be registered for Integrity 1000 when you register for your first-semester courses. The course will be available in your list of courses in Brightspace which you can access using your my.mun.ca login.

To pass the course, you must achieve a grade of 12/15 (80%) on each of the two quizzes included in the course. A grade of PAS will appear on your transcript at the end of the term in which you successfully complete the course.

There are no textbooks required as the course content is entirely online. It is structured so that you complete it step-by-step from the links under Course Content in Brightspace. There are links throughout the course which will take you to resources for more information about academic integrity. The course features a variety of learning activities. You may repeat the modules and quizzes as many times as required to successfully pass the course. Once completed, you will continue to have access to a version of the course for reference throughout your university career.
