Edinburgh-based maritime safety and security technology company Zelim has chosen the Marine Institute’s The Launch, a NATO DIANA test centre, as the site for its next phase of technology trials under the Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) program
Zelim advanced to Phase 2 of DIANA with its flagship product, ZOE, an AI-enabled detection, tracking and alerting system for man-overboard search and rescue. Earlier this year, it demonstrated its capabilities at NATO naval exercises and participated in the US Navy’s BlueTIDE in-water demonstration event. Now, Zelim is preparing to test ZOE in the challenging maritime conditions offered by The Launch.
Why The Launch?
As a designated NATO DIANA test centre, The Launch provides a unique environment for innovators to evaluate their technologies in real-world conditions. Zelim selected The Launch specifically for its harsh weather and sea states, including fog, wave, and ice activity, which are ideal for testing ZOE’s capabilities.
“The Launch offers the extreme conditions needed to rigorously test new use cases for our ZOE system. It’s the ideal environment to demonstrate the technology’s reliability and accelerate its adoption across defence and commercial markets,” said Andy Tipping, Co-founder and Business Development Director, Zelim.
Technology and Collaboration
Zelim’s ZOE system uses AI modeling in camera systems to detect persons in the water with greater speed and accuracy than traditional methods. In preparation for the trials, The Launch will install ZOE on its Autonomous Surface Vessel (ASV), marking a novel use of ASVs for search and rescue in Canada.
Further to the equipment installation and integration, personnel at The Launch will assist with live testing in adverse maritime conditions along with data analysis and performance evaluation. Live trials are expected to take place in Winter 2025/Spring 2026.
DEFSEC Participation
The Launch will also be active at DEFSEC Atlantic Sept. 30 – Oct. 2 in Halifax, NS, meeting with NATO DIANA accelerators to showcase its capabilities and attract entrepreneurs and researchers to its test centre. This engagement highlights The Launch’s growing role as a strategic hub for defence innovation in North America.
“Being part of DIANA Phase 2 is not just a milestone for Zelim—it’s a validation of The Launch’s value to the global defence innovation and testing,” said Kelley Santos, director, The Launch.
Zelim’s Next Steps
Originally developed for commercial maritime and offshore sectors, ZOE has evolved into a multi-functional platform capable of detecting navigational hazards, security threats, and unmanned surface vessels.
Phase 2 of DIANA provides Zelim with up to €300,000 in funding, a dedicated NATO commercial advisor and support to accelerate defence adoption and secure initial contracts.
