In February, Captain Fabian Lambert, Assistant Head of the School of Maritime Studies, attended the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW).

Invited as a member of the Canadian Delegation with Transport Canada, he joined representatives from more than 100 member countries at the IMO headquarters in London, England.

As a delegation member of the HTW sub-committee, he participated in daily sessions focused on addressing gaps within the current International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).

“It was a fantastic experience to attend the IMO and contribute to discussions surrounding the STCW Convention and Code,”

“The sessions provided immersive insight into the process of how member countries come together to present and deliberate changes that promote education and training standards for seafarers.”

In talks for promoting better training and education for seafarers, the HTW sub-committee discussed topics such as cybersecurity awareness, ballast water management, mental health and psychological safety, violence and harassment prevention, simulation for sea time qualifying service, and alternative fuels and propulsion technology.

“At the Marine Institute, we have a long history of providing comprehensive marine education and training to students and industry professionals. We’re proud that graduates of our programs are contributing to the needs of the Canadian and global seafaring communities,” he said.

“We offer a wide variety of education and training opportunities in our programs and industrial training courses. Also, within the School, we have researchers dedicated to making advancements in the field of Human Factors work in the maritime domain.”

As Assistant Head for the School of Maritime Studies, Capt. Lambert provided input from the perspective of post-secondary education and industry training for future and current seafarers.

“I’d like to thank Transport Canada for inviting me to attend the IMO as a member of the Canadian Delegation. It was a rewarding experience, and I was happy to share knowledge on maritime training and competency, and to contribute to ongoing efforts to advance safety within the industry.”
