Jennifer Howell, enrolment management co-ordinator with the Marine’s Institute’s Academic and Student Affairs office, is one of this year’s recipients of the President’s Awards for Exemplary Service
In the award citation, Ms. Howell was recognized for bringing new ideas and perspectives to student recruitment initiatives that result in increased enrolment at the Marine Institute, supporting youth engagement initiatives and building strong relationships with key stakeholders.
Her nominators wrote, “Jennifer epitomizes professionalism, compassion, and commitment to the students, faculty and staff. Her leadership, integrity, and critical thinking in responses to challenging situations have advanced the recruitment and retention of students to the very successful position we find ourselves in today. Jennifer has changed the parts of the institution that help bind it together.”
From the time Jennifer arrived at the Marine Institute, she has gone above and beyond. “For example, she leads the co-ordination of the School of Maritime Studies’ annual Model Boat Race. Throughout the years, this engaging event required her to bring together a diverse team of faculty and students,” stated the award citation.
Beyond her role, she volunteers with the Marine Institute social club and spearheaded community initiatives such as the Holyrood two-hour tidy. She also volunteered her time to mentor the Eastern Edge Robotics team and Let’s Talk Science students.
“Receiving the notification that I was one of this year’s recipients was an incredible moment for me. I was humbled by words of support from my colleagues and thankful that I get to work with such an incredible group of people,” expressed Ms. Howell. “In a such a challenging year, this has allowed me stand still for a moment, be grateful, and just smile.”
The awards presentation ceremony is scheduled for 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9, and may be viewed online. A link to the webcast will be available the day of the ceremony on the President’s Awards web page.
