World Oceans Day on the West Coast

Students in Corner Brook, Benoit’s Cove, Meadows, Pasadena and Deer Lake are talking everything oceans this week. It’s all part of a series of Youth Ocean Workshops being held for K-12 students in celebration of World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day is a global day of ocean celebration and collaboration for a better future. The west coast workshops will include an Aboriginal water dance and presentations and workshops about ocean conservation. Students will also explore a giant map of the world’s oceans and make printed fish.

“We’re very excited to be celebrating World Oceans Day on the west coast,” said Tiffany Martin, Youth Engagement Coordinator with Academic Student Affairs at the Fisheries and Marine Institute. “Our goal is that the hands-on sessions and activities will provide the students with an opportunity to not only learn about our oceans, but spark an interest in marine sustainability.”

The Youth Ocean Workshops are being held in partnership with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, ACAP and the Qalipu First Nations. There are six sessions, with one being facilitated in French.

As part of the west coast activities, a public lecture is also taking place at the Corner Brook Civic Centre. The event takes place on June 8 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and will include a Qalipu presentation and recap of Oceans Day events in the area. Guest speak is the Marine Institute’s Dr. Brett Favaro who will introduce his new book, ‘The Carbon Code: How You Can Become a Climate Change Hero.’
