The Fry Family Memorial was founded by Marlene and Darryl Fry both alumnus of Memorial University from which Mr. Fry was granted an honorary degree. The foundation is well known in the province for supporting education, health, social causes, and the arts
When Mr. Fry was Chairman, CEO of Cytec Industries he put great emphasis on developing leaders and that focus has been a core value of the foundation.
That value has been particularly demonstrated in Newfoundland and Labrador where the foundation has already granted over 1000 scholarships. The foundation also does mentoring with some of the students that receive their scholarships. "After nearly 20 years of operation we at the foundation continue to have a passion to help with the development of young Newfoundland and Labrador leaders. So we are pleased to be a part of the world class Marine Institute program,” said Darryl Fry.
Now they are lending their support to students at the Marine Institute. This winter, three leadership awards will be introduced into the Marine Institute’s growing scholarship program, becoming some of the most significant financial awards provided to Marine Institute students throughout the year.
Two Fry Family Foundation Leadership Awards will be given to students in any year of study of an undergraduate program at the Marine Institute. The Vice President’s Fry Family Foundation Excellence in Leadership Award will go to a student in the final semester of a three or four year undergraduate program at the Marine Institute.
Through an application process, students must demonstrate outstanding leadership throughout the course of their program, through academic work, professional work placements, if applicable, and community involvement.
“The Fry Family Foundation Leadership Awards go beyond just being a scholarship program,” said Glenn Blackwood, vice-president, Memorial University (Marine Institute). “They celebrate and encourage the development of leadership qualities that can be applied at home in our communities, at work and in our classrooms – qualities that we see every day among our students, sometimes even in the smallest but most significant ways.”
The Winter 2017 Scholarships and Awards ceremony will take place March 9 at 12 pm in Hampton Hall.
