Marine Institute Taking Action to Address Mould

The Marine Institute has closed its food pilot plant and restricted access to its aquaculture facility due to the detection of mould

Thursday, December 1, 2011

This action was taken on the advice of a consultant, contracted by the Dept. of Transportation and Works, after air quality samples and swabs were conducted. The Department of Transportation and Works, as the owners of the building, have acted immediately to address the problem.

Remediation work began on both facilities on November 28 and it is anticipated that this work will be completed and the areas retested before the Christmas holidays begin. The institute is developing a contingency plan to ensure the impact on our academic programs and applied research activities is minimal.

The Marine Institute has been assured that employees, students and clients can continue to work on campus while repairs take place. The Department of Transportation and Works is working with the institute to determine the root cause of the mould growth and to take action to prevent its reoccurrence.
