Youth and the Oceans Conference a success

The MI Ocean Net held its 13th annual Youth and the Oceans Conference at the Inuksuk High School in Iqaluit on Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Friday, October 21, 2011

This conference celebrated the opportunities for youth to make lasting meaningful changes in the sustainability of ocean environmental activity.

The event welcomed over 300 high school students and teachers in a day-long series of thought-provoking presentations, interactive discussions, and exciting events that focused on marine environmental issues which represent leadership and career opportunities for youth.

Simon Shaimaiyuk, a grade 12 student, said the conference really opened up his eyes about the future of sustainability. "Justin did a great job with all the hard work that he did, and it really showed through his presentations," said Shaimaiyuk. "I was really interested in what he had to say, but what really caught my attention is how much garbage was collected in one afternoon in the province of Newfoundland. I think that shows how much you can accomplish with a group of determined people that want to make a change. I am really interested in going to the conference in February being held in St. Johns."

As part of MI Ocean Net's Youth and the Oceans Conference series for 2011-12, the first Youth and the Oceans chapter has been established at the Inuksuk High school. Pascale Baillargeon, teacher and guidance counsellor at the school received the award and a donation of $500 to help establish the chapter and begin planning. The chapter will develop leadership capacity in youth as well as increase opportunities to get youth engaged in ocean sustainability issues and action plans.

Four students were also presented with awards in honour of their artwork. Submissions had to relate to the marine environment and convey an important message/theme of sustainability, conservation, or taking action. Justin Dearing, MI Ocean Net coordinator, was delighted to bring the conference to Iqaluit. "In such a booming community which is experiencing tremendous growth, new economic opportunities, and sustainability challenges it was inspiring to see just how important this event was to them," said Dearing. "Both MI Ocean Net and the Inuksuk High School will explore every opportunity to develop this incredible relationship into the future. It was moving to see such a connected culture and feel how passionate they are about the land and the oceans."
