Marine Institute student, Jennifer Styles, was honoured today as one of the first ever recipients of an Oil and Gas Week scholarship today at an event launching the 7th annual Newfoundland and Labrador Oil and Gas Week celebrations. The third-year marine engineering student was one of four post-secondary students awarded the new scholarships valued at $1,000 each
Students enrolled in petroleum-related programs at the province’s public post-secondary educational institutions qualify for this scholarship. This year three of the four recipients are from, or attending school in, rural Newfoundland and Labrador.
“We are thrilled to announce the establishment of a new scholarship program as part of Oil and Gas Week,” said Tim Lawrence, chair of Oil and Gas Week 2009. “The purpose of Oil and Gas week is to celebrate our industry and promote career opportunities to the province’s future workforce. The scholarship program is just one example of how the industry is working to inform young people about career opportunities related to oil and gas.”
“We would encourage the public to get involved in Oil and Gas Week by participating in an event or by learning more about this province’s oil and gas industry at www.nloilandgasweek.ca,” said Lawrence.
