Students and employers connect at Marine Institute's Career Fair

Career opportunities in the oceans sector have never been greater

That was the message students received as they met with employers and industry representatives from the marine transportation, ocean technology, aquaculture and food sectors at the Marine Institute (MI) 7th Annual Career Fair.

Employers from across Canada were lining up to meet the institute’s outstanding students, graduates and alumni as they highlighted the endless opportunities that existed and discussed the latest industry developments in their field.

“Every sector is looking for remarkable men and women to work in and lead their industries today and in the years to come,” said Glenn Blackwood, executive director, Marine Institute. “Our graduates are being sought out for their outstanding reputation in professionalism and leadership and because of the world class education and training they have received here at the institute. We will continue to attract the best and the brightest students who will continue on to become future leaders in our province, across Canada and around the world.”

With more than 39 exhibitors and presenters, this year’s career fair, which saw exhibition space completely sold out three weeks prior, proved to be the largest and most successful to date.

“The strong demand for MI students and graduates is clearly evident given the response from industry to participate in this year’s career fair,” said Bernie Brockerville, co-chair of the organizing committee for the career fair. “The event is a great opportunity for employers to build awareness and promote career opportunities that exist for our students in their field of study.”

The two-day event showcases the knowledge and skills of Marine Institute students and graduates including those from nautical science, marine engineering, food technology, naval architecture, marine environment, aquaculture, ROV, ocean instrumentation and advanced diploma and certificates and matches them with employers who are seeking new employees for their workforce.

During the first day of the career fair, industry representatives and alumni had the opportunity to showcase their companies and success. Presentations were scheduled throughout the day highlighting employment opportunities and profiling industry partnerships.

Students had the opportunity to ask important questions pertaining to their chosen career path. On Feb.12 employers will be setting up displays and interacting with students and graduates from the institute’s wide range of certificate, diploma, advanced diploma and degree programs. Students will meet exhibitors and discuss opportunities that they have available for both work term and full time employment.

The fair is open to all Marine Institute students and alumni who want to connect with potential employers, seek out employment opportunities and discuss the latest industry trends. The general public are also invited to attend tomorrow’s exhibition, taking place at the Marine Institute gymnasium, to learn more about how the marine and ocean industries are contributing to this province’s economic development and employment growth.
