“I always enjoy the presentation of scholarships and awards because it gives me a first-hand look at the future of the oceans, marine, seafood, aquaculture and ocean safety industries,” said Glenn Blackwood, executive director, Marine Institute. “The young men and women who received scholarships and awards are clearly on their way to becoming the future leaders of their sectors and it was a pleasure to see them rewarded for their efforts.”

The scholarships and awards handed out are funded by a variety of organizations, companies, individuals and MI industry partners. Blackwood says this type of support helps ensure the Marine Institute can continue to attract the best and brightest students from across Newfoundland and Labrador and the rest of Canada.

“The students presented with scholarships and awards deserve to be celebrated and thanks to our donors the Marine Institute can give these students the credit they deserve,” Blackwood said. “These scholarships help MI recruit some of the top young minds in the country and I want to thank all of our donors for making these scholarships available.”

Among the 79 scholarships presented were 15 new entrance scholarships for first-year students at the Marine Institute. MI also unveiled three new scholarships for returning students: the April Arnott Memorial Scholarship, won by Matthew Sweeney, Advanced Marine Environmental; the Grant and Phyllis Noseworthy Memorial Scholarship, won by Obadah Shadid, Advanced Ocean Instrumentation and the Vincent and Violet Raymond Scholarship, won by Mark Peters, Advanced Naval Architecture. Samantha Banton of MI’s Advanced Marine Environmental program was awarded the Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists Scholarship, marking the first time a Marine Institute student has ever won this national scholarship.

“All the scholarship and award winners, as well as their families, should be very proud,” Blackwood said. “It was a great night for the Marine Institute.”

The Autumn Presentation of Scholarships and Awards took place in the Marine Institute gymnasium, with more than 240 people in attendance.
